Happy Earth Village - Taiwan-US Connection PART2
Happy Earth Village - Taiwan-US Connection PART2
The exchange between Yung-Ning and James Caldwell Elementary School in New Jersey, USA, has entered its second phase! This time, the third-grade students and their American counterparts each filmed videos about "School Life" to learn about the differences between Taiwanese and American campuses. From the videos made by American children, we found out that they don't have lunch in the classrooms like we do. Instead, they have it in separate spaces with students from other classes. They can prepare their own food or buy lunch on the spot. The content of their lunch is also very different from ours, and their playground looks more like a park, unlike ours which have playgrounds and running tracks. Additionally, the American buddies introduced their music class, art class, ESL English class, and their ways of going to and from school. For Taiwanese children, all of these are really eye-opening experiences!
Guided by their teachers, the children from Yung-Ning selected several features of their campus to introduce. We divided into groups to introduce Duck House, Yushan Library, school bags, nutritious lunches, as well as music, art, and physical education classes, along with the elephant slide, dismissal time, health exercises, the election of goodwill ambassadors, and classroom book boxes, and so on. The children's imagination about campus life is truly rich and diverse!
Through this exchange, the children had to delve into understanding the unique features of their own campus in order to find materials for the exchange, and then learn about multiculturalism through sharing from different countries. For the children, this was an eye-opening experience.
Furthermore, the children also practiced English diligently to introduce their own campus life. They realized that English is not just a subject but also a tool for communication and exchange. Learning English is very practical!
Teachers, while accompanying the children in preparing for these two exchanges, found that the children became more experienced each time. Even when facing the camera alone, they could confidently introduce their responsible projects. They are visibly growing!
