Reasonable Suspicion Drug/Alcohol Testing
If you suspect that an employee is at work under the influence of alcohol or an illegal/non-prescribed drug, you should immediately contact Julie Dodge via cell phone (614-348-5804), and she will assist you with the process, but you need to act WHILE the employee is at the Y.
Please click here for how to best document and act on reasonable suspicion.
Since we suspect that the employee is under the influence, we should not allow the employee to drive him/herself for testing. A supervisor should drive him/her, or a cab/UBER/Lyft can be used. Provisions for cab fare/UBER/Lyft should be made using Y a credit card/petty cash for the two-way trip (to the testing facility and then home). Refusal to submit to testing when requested would be grounds for termination of employment.
When sending an employee for suspicion, we will test for both alcohol and drug use. A breath test is used for alcohol, and a urine test is used for drugs. The 9-panel urine test identifies illegal substances, prescription drugs, and substances used to mask positive tests. If someone tests positive for a prescription drug, the testing facility will work with the employee to secure verification that the prescription is valid for that person. If a prescription is verified, we will receive a report of “negative.” However, in accordance with our drug-free workplace policy, any level of marijuana intoxication while on duty is grounds for termination, even if there is a medical prescription for its use. We receive instant reports for alcohol use and drug testing results within 5 working days. The employee should be placed on administrative leave until the results of both tests are received. Results and invoices are sent to Julie Dodge.
Click the link below for OhioHealth testing sites (hours vary by location). WorkHealth & Urgent Cares should be our first choice and used if open. Emergency Rooms should be utilized as a LAST RESORT (ER cost is 5x that of a WorkHealth or Urgent Care location).
OhioHealth no longer uses a Request for Service form. Employees must present a photo ID for testing. When an employee identifies as YMCA staff, OhioHealth will instruct its staff on the appropriate tests to administer.
