Reading through the March 2016 edition of Ceramics Monthly my eye was caught by a piece made by Tom Turner. Turner has been working with pottery since high school, he was taking classes to just earn easy credits. He then fell in love with the work, he originally didn’t want to go to college. But after working in ceramics his teacher inspired him and he has been making pieces ever since. Looking at the pieces that are pictured in the magazine the description described them as being fired at cone 9. I was interested in the way he made some of his pieces have glaze where it looked like oil is dripping down on the sides but on some of them, there are many intricate details. I enjoyed the way he expanded his horizons with what he does to each piece and what type of style he sticks with.
Reading through this magazine and seeing Turner’s work intrigued me. I like the variety he has in his pieces. I wonder if he fried at this cone level in high school? If he didn’t what made him want to? I wonder what his planning process is like. I wonder what type of glazes he uses in order to get so many different designs. And lastly how long does it takes for him to finish a piece?
