Purpose: Make a slab mug that demonstrates connecting slabs securely, creating and attaching a handle, and illustrates a personal narrative. This should be done through the handle, textures, added-on features, and/or glazing.
Reflection:
The idea that my mug sprouts off of is a story about how in October of 2020 my family and I rented a 12 person van and traveled throughout Yellowstone Park. We flew to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and that is where our road trip started. We slowly made our way into the Grand Tetons, and through the states of Wyoming, Montana, North, and South Dakota. The main focus on this mug was about traveling especially through the Tetons, the water that is shown on the handle represents the lakes and rivers that flow throughout the mountains. To somehow show a personal part of this trip on the mug I incorporated the van, we had a total of eight people traveling with us, and we drove about 1600 miles throughout the whole trip. To say the very least it was an amazing experience.
If I were to go back in time and do anything to my mug I would probably make the glazing around the handle, less messy, and the carving of the water design more intricate. I love how the mountains came out especially the combination of glazes that I used, if I were to change them, I would add a little snowcap on the summit of each mountain. The color of the road came out a little rustier than I anticipated, but overall the contrast it brings to the mug is very appealing to the observer. One of my favorite aspects of this mug is how I shaved away some of the clay to make the mountains/road/van have that 3-Dimensional look to it. I would also maybe include a river near the road somehow, without it looking out of place, but so it could be connected to the waterfall/rive on the handle.
