Sculpture
Fall 2025
Fall 2025
I am most proud of my Paying Attention Through Sculpture project because I worked with clay, which I wasn’t super familiar with, and did more illustrative work on the outside. I liked how I spaced everything out and communicated information clearly. This impacted my learning because it was using a new medium and had to draw on a 3D surface, and understanding glaze and how different depths and scratching techniques translate to a final image.
One of the most informative projects for me was the reed sculpture, which is a really simple and unassuming medium at face value. I enjoyed learning how to work with that material, and the different processes required to get a finished product, as well as thinking about how the work would fit into the space. It showed how a super simple material can be used to create really compelling shapes to fill an area.
I met my hopes and goals for this semester well, and the only part where I drifted was organization and time management, which I should work on. I wanted to work with both stone and plaster, which I did both of in my Alabaster carving project, and my memento project, where we made plaster molds of our hands and arms.
Sculpture is different from other forms of art because you need to consider how space is used differently than if you were to do something 2D. You need to think more about angles and how something might be perceived, and also the importance of materials for different uses.
To stay organized this semester, I’m going to use my online planner that lets me mark times and gives me reminders for homework and other assignments.
Things that might inspire my work this semester are nature and “naturally formed” sculptures and shapes, and taking influences from that.
I’m really curious about working with Stone and Plaster molds this semester, and seeing how I can be creative with something that replicates, and trying to add to that.
