19x16 | Acrylic on Masonite
My overarching focus for this piece was to think about the relationship between lines and shape to create flow and feeling in a piece.
Some ideas that guided this piece were color and the flow of lines, as well as nature as an inspiration, such as leaf veins and the flow of air.
For this work, I used Acrylic paint on Masonite, so I had a super flat surface to work on, and I watered down the paint with water so I could blend it more easily.
I used a sponge to create a gradient in the background of my painting, then went over with a bunch of layers to change opacity and create depth with lights and darks. I added smaller details to fill some spaces that felt unbalanced.
I chose acrylic paints for this piece because they're something I’m familiar with, and I wanted to focus more on the creative process rather than trying to figure out how to use a new medium. Additionally, I chose acrylic because it allowed me to blend my paints to create gradients while still having crisp lines to contrast.
My piece shows evidence of practice, experimentation, and revision through my different field ideas in my sketchbook, and how I used different aspects of my ideas in my final piece, rather than just scaling up my original plan. It shows how my ideas evolved and how I adapted as I progressed.
This piece will inform my work going forward in multiple ways. To start, I'd focus more on opacity and planning, because I found myself working around things I had finished to add a background, and then needing to redo parts because of it. I also would focus on space and avoiding tangents in my works, since some parts of this piece bother me because of that.
