Purpose:
To understand and demonstrate how to make a good movie poster;
To visually capture people’s attention through a movie poster;
To understand how designers create suspense and a particular mood in a poster design.
Designers can use specific colors to convey moods or suspense in their posters, emphasizing specific parts to send a message. In my posters, I related the title to my object. I did this both by making my object an actual part of the title, or being vaguer in the title and adding the object on the side. In both scenarios, my object is the main focus of the poster which makes a less ordinary, and more important, object.
For Dead Ends, my object is a dead-end sign and is used as the primary weapon of the protagonist in her search for her family, and traverses the dangerous landscape of the post-apocalyptic world. This affected my decision-making, meaning I added blood and dirt to the sign to show increased use and made her hold it on her shoulder in a slightly threatening way. For my other poster, which is more of a comedy, I used light colors made the sign a “Route 1 Maine” sign, and named the movie Route 1. This makes the sign a focus since during the journey they’ll see it frequently.
