Purpose:
To demonstrate your learning about watercolor properties and techniques;
To use knowledge of landscape perspective strategies to show depth on a 2D surface;
To create a final watercolor landscape, using a landscape photograph for reference.
To experiment, explore, and learn a variety of watercolor painting techniques;
"Secluded Pond" 11/13/23 6x9 in, Watercolor
I learned how to use a lot of pigment to create depth in my painting, using darker colors in the foreground and lighter colors in the background, I learned different techniques to create effective layers to add to the depth of the final painting, and I learned how to create realistic cloud by using a lot of layers and building up color for shadows so they looked more three-dimensional.
For example, I used tissue paper to create a soft edge to the clouds and the water below. Using the tissue paper and the layers helped create a realistic cloud effect and allowed me to get somewhat of an ombre in the water and sky. Then I could go back in with a smaller brush and add more details. It's not perfect, but it was good practice.
I struggled SO much with the tree on the right side of the paper. I kept going to light with my paints and using too much water which made it look muddy and messy. Eventually I committed to using a ton of pigment and adding more detailed strokes which helped a lot. Although I'm still not happy with the final product, it's a lot better than it was.
