I am most proud of my final project (Contemporary Painting) because I went outside my comfort zone and ended up enjoying the process and the result. I worked a lot looser than I usually do, but it helped me focus more on the larger composition and less on minor details. I enjoyed painting a subject that I care about. (my dog, Millie.) Overall, I think I had a lot of growth throughout this project alone, and learned a lot about my artistic preferences, and areas I need to improve.
The most informative project that we did this semester was probably mono-printing, since I had no experience with that kind of art, and learned a lot about the techniques and uses of it. It made me want to learn more about different kinds of printmaking, and how to incorporate it into my own art.
I think that I met some of my goals, including the use of values and improvement in lights and shadows, as well as form. We worked on these in our pastel abstractions, where I needed to use form to convey my image, as well as my sketchbook assignment, where I used one color to create an image, in this case, by bedroom. That involved a lot of cloth and made me think about understanding values, rather than just general shapes.
The art project that I think I’m most proud of making is probably one of my digital drawings. I’ve always wanted to get good at digital art, mostly for convenience and the lack of mess, and I feel like I’m finally improving. I like to draw portraits of people I find interesting on Pinterest, and I think this one turned out pretty okay.
I find inspiration from nature, other art, music, color, photographs, and especially people. I get inspired by individuality or unique features. I love to draw people I care about because it can be a way of expressing love, although I do get self-conscious rather easily. I love to use bright colors, and if I see a specific color scheme that I like, it can give me a creative boost. I love being around other artists because I can learn from them.
I would like to develop and strengthen creating good compositions in my pieces, as well as genuinely enjoying the process rather than fixating on a specific result. I would like to focus more on anatomy and proportions, as well as creating a good balance of values in my pieces.
Some processes that I would like to do this semester would be more gestural drawings! Those were super fun, but I’d also really like to get more familiar with gouache and acrylic paints. I love to paint, but I can get frustrated if I don’t know how to use the materials properly. Additionally, I would love to do some mixed media pieces, specifically involving collage!
