The Bismuth Necklace

March 12, 2021

By Emily D.

Lelia sighs and walks down another cold, empty hall of the abandoned castle, “Do you think this was a bad idea Maria?”

“Come on, It’ll be fine. I’ll protect you if anything goes wrong.”

“I know, but this is where we got stuck together in the first place.”

“Am I that bad?”

“No, it’s just know it’s dangerous.”

“It’s fine here. Just don’t put on random bracelets you find on the floor.”

“I thought it was cool, and I thought I could get it off after.”

Maria sighs, “I know… Let’s see if I still know my way around this place.”

They turn down another hall to find a staircase.

“Where do these lead, Maria?”

“The bedrooms. Want to see mine?”

Lelia nods and they head to the upstairs bedroom area. After a bit of looking, they enter a large, pastel room with expensive curtains, gold traced furniture, and porcelain dolls in fancy dresses. Well, it would be like that if the curtains weren’t torn, the windows broken, furniture falling apart, and the dolls smashed to pieces with their dresses torn and muddy. Maria lays on the bed, an action Lelia wouldn’t dare do after only looking at it for a second.

“You never told me what happened?”

“Didn’t you pay attention in class?”

“Um…”

Maria sighs, “My dad made a dumb mistake which caused a revolution.”

“Oh? What was it?”

“He wasn’t listening to the people, he was greedy for more wealth, but what pushed it over the edge,” She takes a deep breath and shows a scar across her neck, “was beheading his daughter for treason. I helped plan the revolution...”

“I’m sorry...”

“It’s in the past now. Long in the past,” she pauses a moment, “I wanted to look for something. Follow me.”

Maria enters another bedroom at the end of the hall with Lelia right behind her. This one is covered in vines and jewels. After a moment of looking, Maria opens a small jewelry box and takes out a silver necklace with beautiful bismuth on it.

“It’s so pretty.”

“It’s my mother’s. I always wanted it, but she said she’d give it on my 18th birthday.” “So you got it?”

“You think I’m 18? I died at 16. I never got it.”

“Oh… Are you going to take it now?”

“I… I don’t know. I could,” she lifts the necklace to her neck, but puts it down again. “What’s wrong?”

“I don’t want to steal from my mother.”

“Is she still here?”

“Is she alive? No she died in-”

“No, no, no. Is she here like you were, as a ghost?”

“I don’t think so. I wandered around for years and never saw her.”

Maria lifts the necklace up to her neck again, “Maybe we should take it. Before someone else does I mean.”

“It’s up to you. I can’t really stop you.”

Maria puts it on and floats to the door, “I know. Let’s get out of here.”

“Good idea.”

Creative Writing Challenge PART TWO

March 5, 2021

We challenged the members of Scribbler to create a story based on a random roll of a story spinner. The second prompt was:

A Brilliant physicist has a rollercoaster breakdown on a volcano three months from now.

Here's our take on that random story by Emily M.

The Glooberry Disaster

March 12, 2021

By Emily M.

Let me tell you about a friend. Her name was Lindsay. She was a physicist that tested roller coasters in unique places with her coworker Daniel.

One place that they will be testing is a roller coaster near a volcano on Glooberry Island. The volcano was called Mt. Sticky Raspberry. Every 500,000 years the volcano exploded sticky, toxic raspberry jam. An amusement park company thought that it would be completely safe to build a rollercoaster there, but they were wrong.

She and Daniel would be testing the Berryland roller coaster three months from now. The natives around the island, who were strawberry rabbits, tried to warn the company to stay away from the volcano, but the company didn’t listen.

Lindsay and Daniel were excited to test out the coaster when they heard from a team of expert volcanologists suggesting that they heed the signs of Mt. Sticky Raspberry exploding in a short amount of time. While testing the rollercoaster, they smelled a horrid rotten raspberry smell that was coming from a volcano. Could this be a sign of an eruption?

Anyway, the company opened up the park to the natives. They also decided to pay no attention to the natives’ warnings about Mt. Sticky Raspberry. The next day there were streams of the oozing, toxic jam coming from the crater of the volcano.

In the process of all of that happening, Lindsay and Daniel were on the volcano testing the coaster. It was a good thing for a little while when they were testing the coaster because they were temporarily safe from the volcano when all of a sudden, Mt. Sticky Raspberry exploded!

Then, things got worse, the roller coaster had a breakdown right at the base of the great volcano. The lava was flowing at the speed of light. They were trapped! They started to get light headed because of the toxic gases.

But then a miracle happened, the roller coaster started to work again. They were out of the way of the lava in no time. Lindsay and Daniel decided after the incident that they were going to quit their job as roller coaster testers. And that they would not be getting close to any volcano anytime soon.

Creative Writing Challenge

March 5, 2021

We challenged the members of Scribbler to create a story based on a random roll of a story spinner. The first prompt was:

A small child is afraid of snakes in a school hallway during the Renaisssance.

Rachel K., Emily D., Peyton H., Ash N. and Sa'Vannah S. rose to the challenge, creating these stories and the accompanying artwork. Great job, Scribbler staff!

Story One: Ophidiophobia

By Rachel K.

A young girl who was about eight walked through a hallway in her school. Tons of other kids and students were rushing through the hallway along with her, their skirts and jackets swinging. The young girl's name was Bridget, who looked around with dread and fear.

The walls were filled with snake paintings, green and black banners, and everything snake related. Today was the Super Snake celebration. The day was all about respect for snakes. People dressing in snake clothing, snake activities, and being very respectful and kind to a real live Cobra. The whole celebration took place in this hallway. That was why Bridget hated the day. She had an enormous fear of snakes.

Bridget's face went very pale. She had to get out of here. Bridget slowly began to make her way to the exit when she saw a huge snake, with a flickering tongue and green and yellow skin. The snake was blocking the exit. Bridget schreached and jumped away, holding her hands over her head. Please don't hurt me, she thought. Go away.

Bridget then she noticed that it was not a real snake. It was an older girl dressed in green and gold snake skin with a matching mask. She sighed with relief and lowered her hands from her face and head. Suddenly, More people began to come through the hallway with snake clothing, chatting away with their friend's as they passed Bridget. Her best friend, Aeolus, was in the crowd and made his way over to Bridget when he saw her. Aeolus was the same age as Bridget with messy brown hair and a snakeskin outfit.

"Why do you look so scared, Bridget?" Her friend asked. "Snakes are awesome."

"What?" Bridget said.

She was no longer paying attention to Aeolus. She was trying to find a way to escape the celebration. But she knew she wouldn't be able to.

"You look very scared Bridget." Aeolus repeated. "What for?"

Bridget was still not paying attention. As she stared around she almost felt her heart stop beating. In the hallway farther down was a huge stage. It was covered in so many snake things as well as the same things that decorated the hallway walls. An older man was on the stage, holding a microphone. In his other hand was a small see-through box that held a Cobra. A Cobra.

Bridget stumbled. "A s-s-snake!" She yelled, covering her eyes.

"Yeah. The snake's name is Leus." Aeolus answered, nodding. "He is very cool."

Bridget uncovered her eyes as Aeolus grabbed her hand and dragged her toward the stage, which all around was crowded with people. The older man was still speaking. "...This will be the best celebration of all of them. Leus is very happy to be here." The man, whose name was actually John, put the microphone down and stared at the snake. While doing that the cage shattered that held Leus.

Immediately the whole room began to erupt into chaos. People were running around to catch the snake before it strayed too far. In the midst of it all was Bridget who just stood there in shock, her hands and body shaking like a leaf. I am okay, she thought to herself. The snake will not bother me. The snake will not bother me.

But Bridget didn't seem to see the huge Cobra, Leus, crawl across the ground, right by her feet. When she did notice it she screamed so loud that she literally almost jumped from her skin. Her eyes were now locked with Leus and there was only one thing that Bridget could do. Pass out.

After Bridget woke up she noticed that she wasn't at the school but she was in her bed. The whole thing she went through was all a dream. Or was it?

Story Two: The Snake

By Ash N.

The scales scraping and rubbing against the canvas. A sound she’d heard many times before. A sound that struck fear into her heart. So she stood there. Frozen. Hoping it wouldn’t touch her. The anxiety flooded her body like a river to the town. The waves crashing against her lungs. Her breath running away trying to escape the tsunami of dread that grew within her. She stumbled back a few steps. The hallway seemed to extend without end.

Story 3: Little Lorenzo

By Peyton H.

In the time of the Renaissance, a young lad named Lorenzo was a knight's son. He thought he was tough, he thought he was all that and more. But he was only 3. So he had to stay home with his Mother.

One day his mother found Lorenzo’s fathers helmet. So she just gave it to Lorenzo, and he went off to his father. While he was going down the path a snake came along and was in the middle of the path. Lorenzo shrieked with fright. He fainted with a clunk when he hit the ground. When he woke up another shriek came out because the snake was wrapped around him. It was big, yellow, and had teeth. Lorenzo was losing his breath. The snake kept tightening his grip, Lorenzo was scared for his dear life.

Meanwhile, at home, his Dad was home to get his helmet. His mom was so confused. She just sent Lorenzo to give it to him. At first he thought one of his enemies got him, but they all died. At that point they knew something was wrong. They rushed outside and went on all the possible ways that he could have gone. At this point Lorenzo was hanging onto his life by a thread. He was losing air fast. Using his last bit of air, he started screaming for someone to help him. His parents heard him immediately.

They ran to Lorenzo. When they got there, the snake was like a skyscraper. It was huge! Lorenzo's father took out his sword, and ripped the snake into shreds. Lorenzo came to them gasping for air. Once they were home Lorenzo’s father decided to teach him some fighting skills so this would never happen again.
