sign-ups starting for the Have a heart Basketball tournament

February 8, 2019

By Sabrena E.

The 'Have a Heart' basketball tournament will take place on February 19th and 20th. This event is for 7th and 8th graders. Teams will play in a series of 3 on 3 basketball games after school.

This event is for a great cause. The tournament organizers will collect non-perishable food items to donate to local families who cannot afford food for their families. The food items will be given to the Lincs Food Pantry, and passed on to members of the community. All of the food items that will be donated will give smiles and appreciation to those families in need. This 3 on 3 basketball game can help local families get food, and also help 7th and 8th graders have fun while getting exercise. It is an important event!

Interested students should form a team of three players and sign up the week of Valentine's Day (February 11-15) during homeroom. Each player must bring one non-perishable food item in order to sign up. Have a heart - join the tournament!

Students represent their favorite teams on Jersey Day

February 8, 2019

By Chris G., Makenna S., Lacey E., and Brooke H.

Many people who watch sports have a favorite team that they always watch. On January 31, a Jersey Day was scheduled where students (and teachers!) could wear their favorite team’s jersey. However, due to the snow, Jersey Day was rescheduled for the fourth of February. Quite a few people remembered to wear a jersey, and there was a big variety! From Eagles to Patriots, from Giants to Steelers, many athletes' names were being shown on the backs of WAIS students.

On Jersey Day, many of the students chose jerseys that represented their favorite team or athlete. “I wore Penn State because I really like the team and my whole family does, too.” Said Brianna Z.

Abby C. said, “I wore my Wilson Basketball jersey because I’m on the team. My number is #2.”

“I decided to wear a Steelers jersey because my mom kind of roped me into liking the team, but I do like the way they play,” said Steelers fan, Lily W.

“I wore a jersey that was custom made for my grandfather. It was a hockey jersey for the team, Flyers,” added Lacey E.

Jersey Day was also a celebration of the Super Bowl, which was played on Sunday, February 3, but WAIS students were not impressed by the game. In fact, student Brianna W. said, “It was the worst Super Bowl in history."

The next theme dress day is Thursday, February 14, when students are encouraged to "Wear a Heart" by dressing in pink or red.

DID WAIS STUDENTS GUESS THE OUTCOME OF SUPER BOWL LIII?

February 8, 2019

By Hayden E.

Two weeks ago, we asked WAIS students and staff to guess the outcome of Super Bowl LIII. Unfortunately, it turns out that we don't have crystal balls, and we weren't able to predict the future!

In the survey, 59% of you said that the Rams would win, but the Patriots won. This was a big disappointment for LA.

Sony Michel scored the most touchdowns with one. No one in WAIS guessed he would have the most touchdowns! WAIS students and staff also thought that the Rams would have the most touchdowns (wrong), the Patriots would have the most penalties (also wrong), and the Patriots would have the most turnovers (actually, it was a tie).

We did get one question right. When we asked WAIS students which quarterback would have the most passing yards, 76% of you correctly chose Tom Brady.

The WAIS student who came closest to guessing the winner and final score was eighth grader Braelynn R. She chose the Patriots, but thought the score would be 36-21. Braelynn, please stop by room 707 for your prize!

Jodi Brunstetter, one of our school secretaries, deserves an honorable mention. Her guess of 7-6 came closest to the real ending score of 10-7. Unfortunately, she chose the Rams!

Unless you are a Patriots fan, better luck next year! If you are a Patriots fan, congratulations!

GIRLS' BASKETBALL PLAYERS IMPROVE DURING POSITIVE SEASON

February 8, 2019

By Brielle H. and Braelyn G.

The girls' middle school basketball team showed improvement during their 2018-2019 season. Their coach, Kelly Applegate says this is what she likes to see as a coach, adding, "There have been some hiccups along the road, but ultimately the season has been positive with every player getting better as it's progressed."

The girls work hard every practice. Even their warm-ups are hard work. They do warm-up shooting drills, star drills, and foul shots. Their practice includes layups and jump shots.

Coach Applegate inspires her players to work hard. In her freshman year of college, she helped her team break the national free throw record, setting a new record that still stands across the NCAA in all divisions. She has been coaching for 2 years officially, but has done individual instruction for 12 years. She became interested in coaching as a player at Moravian, and was inspired by her high school coach, too. She says, "The person that inspired me most was my high school coach Mr. Cardinal, who I first met while I was still in middle school. The way he taught me the game and the fundamentals made a huge impact on me and was the foundation for the kind of player I would become." The games that are most memorable for her as a coach are the games where her players do something they haven't done before and show great improvement.

Ahiella B., a seventh grade member of the team who often plays point guard, agrees that the team is showing improvement. She says that even though they have lost a few games, "We work together; never give up or let our guard down, and we do the best with what we've got." This is her first year playing on an official team, although she's played basketball with her family and friends for years. She particularly enjoys the teamwork and being active, and doesn't even mind the practices (which take place every day but Sunday).

As the season comes to a close, many of the players plan to return next year to continue their growth as athletes.

WAIS STUDENTS SHARE THE LOVE

Students celebrate the Wear-A-Heart theme dress day on Thursday, February 14.

February 15, 2019

By Akim G. and Jaylen L.

Valentine's Day is a day where love is in the air. At WAIS, the smell of smalentines is also in the air! A "smalentine" is a Valentine attached to a "smencil" (pencils with delicious smells). Sending a smalentine to a friend cost $1.00. One of the Student Council members says that he sold smalentines because he’s nice. The results of the smalentine sale were definitely nice - the money went to Student Council so the school can have assemblies.

Valentine's Day was also Wear-A-Heart Day, where students were asked to wear pink and red. The weather once again interfered with the theme dress day - many students forgot their pink and red due to the two snow days this week. However, many of the students wore the festive colors.

Now let’s get to the get to the results of the Valentine's Survey (which was created by Brooke H.) 89% of WAIS students and staff knew that Cupid was the mythical creature who shoots love arrows. Students and staff also knew that Valentine’s Day is the second largest card-giving holiday - 82% of you chose the right answer. Only 47% of students knew that Valentine’s Day is on February 14th - because most of you chose the answer where the name of the month was misspelled! Bet you didn't know spelling counted! Only 14% of students realized that teachers get the most Valentines, but 41% guessed that Americans spend 18.2 BILLION dollars a year on this holiday!

While the Student Council didn't make billions on the smalentine sale, they did spread the love through the theme dress day and sweet smelling pencil deliveries. We hope you had a heart filled day!

Student Council members share smiles and sell smencils.

NERVOUS? NOT US!

Fifth and sixth grade students audition for a role in the spring drama club production.

February 15, 2019

By Brianna W. and Savannah P.

On February 11, the Drama Club held auditions for the spring production “Dorothy in Wonderland”. The auditions were held in the multi-purpose room where the brave auditioners were tested on memory, presence (movement), expression (emotion), and projection (loudness).

First, they stood on the stage and stated their name, where they lived, what they like to do in their free time, and why they want to be in Drama. Then, they were assigned a small scene with motions that they had to act out. They had to try to memorize their words that went with the actions.

Lastly, they were put into groups where they took turns performing written lines in front of the directors. After audition everyone earned a score out of a possible 12. The directors chose the parts using the scores, and at about 6:30 pm all the parts were posted on the Drama Club's website.

Akim G., who was cast as the scarecrow, said, “I really wanted the part I got.” Lillian W., the Mad Hatter also liked the part she got, although she wasn't really nervous for the auditions at all.

Sydney P. earned the role of the dormouse, and said, “I was nervous but I wanted a small part and that's what I got.”

The play will be presented on May third and fourth in the multi-purpose room. Tickets will go on sale closer to the date of the play. The story is a re-imagining of the stories of the Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland, and has characters from both stories. The following students earned roles in the auditions:

WILSON MUSICIANS TAKE THEIR SHOW ON THE ROAD

Intermediate school musicians nervously wait for their turn to perform at the State Theatre during the Fine Arts Showcase.

February 22, 2018

By Tosin A., Lillian W., and Chris G.

The Wilson Partners in Education Foundation hosted a Fine Arts Showcase last Friday, February 15th at the State Theatre in Easton. The show was rescheduled from Wednesday, February 13 due to the snow.

During this gala presentation, the following organizations performed songs: the Wilson Area High School Chorus, the Wilson Area High School Drama Club, the Wilson Area High School Jazz Band, the Wilson Area High School Wilsonnaires, the Wilson Area High School Women’s Chorale, the Wilson Area Intermediate School Band, the Wilson Area Intermediate School Chorus, and the District-Wide Fourth Grade Chorus.

Intermediate school student Payton H. enjoyed the performance, especially the song "Music Is." Kailee J. felt that all of the acts did a great job, but Makenna S., Jessica B., Sabrena E. and Savannah P. felt the intermediate school chorus was the best. Brianna P. disagreed - her favorite performance came from the high school drama club. Unfortunately, Aaron M. didn't enjoy the performance. In fact, he said, "The songs were really bad!" As musicians, though, the fact that some people did not enjoy the show just gives these groups motivation to work on the performance. That way, our school concerts will be even better!

The show was held at the Easton State Theatre, a 1500-seat historic theater in Easton known for hosting the Freddy awards. The last minute rescheduling left a few performers frazzled. They hope that next year there will be less snow so that the show can be more organized, but really enjoyed practicing and performing.

Congratulations to all of the performers who worked hard to put on a great show.
