SEVENTH GRADE BREAKS ALL TIME RECORD COLLECTING FOR CHARITY

Seventh graders pose with some of the items selected for needy families in the community.

Mrs. Boucher makes her list and checks it twice... the shopping list for the adopted family, that is!

Penny Wars is a fun contest between the 7th grade homerooms to raise money for a family the WAIS students adopted at a local shelter, the Third Street Alliance for Women and Children. In total, the seventh grade raised over $1,340 for the family in just one week. That was a new record for the 7th grade, who have been holding this annual charity drive for over 15 years!

During the contest, every quarter and paper money put into a jar counted as positive money for a homeroom; while the pennies, nickels, and dimes counted against a homeroom. The homeroom with the most positive money won the contest. This year, that was Mrs. Kirsch's homeroom - by a landslide!

Next, seventh graders were given an opportunity to participate in an essay contest to see which students would go shopping on Wednesday, December 12th at Walmart and spend the raised money for Christmas gifts for the family at the shelter. There were many amazing essays submitted, but only six winners. Brooke H., Dante S., Meena M., Abby S., Angela C., and Mohammad T. were the lucky few that won . The teachers who joined them were Mrs. Korin, Mrs. Morrissey, Mrs. Gagner, and Mrs. Boucher.

After two long hours of shopping for the items needed by the family from the shelter, the students went to the built-in Dunkin’ Donuts and got blue slushies, which happen to be the favorite, and one student got a scrumptious Kisses Donut.

Meanwhile, the teachers spent most of the leftover money on gift cards to Walmart for other needy families in the community to buy groceries. A check will also be donated to the shelter to help other families in need.

Congrats to everyone that participated in Penny Wars, entered the essay contest, and those who took part in the Walmart Run! The seventh graders can be very proud of themselves for making the holidays brighter for local families.

The donations added up quickly!

All of the contest winners worked hard to choose the best items to help a local family with a new start.

Of course, they had a little fun, too!

The seventh and eighth grade Drama Club performed the play "The Snow White Variety Show" last weekend. This play was a retelling of the classic fairy tale "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" but with a talk show twist.

The seventh and eighth graders in the club have been meeting every Monday and Wednesday after school in the cafeteria since September. The advisors of Drama Club are Mrs. Korin and Mrs. Boucher. The members of the club were excited to be acting in a play so that their parents can come and see their performance.

Aiden H., who played Jack Sprat, the king, and a CSI dwarf said that he enjoys drama, and while he sometimes forgets his lines, he is not scared to be on stage because he has "been doing this since 2015.”

Kailee J. agreed that she was nervous the first time she was on stage, but now she only worries about her many roles (she was the snowflake, the ogre, Igor, and Sleeping Beauty) when she doesn't practice. Kassie R., who played several roles and helped with the lighting and commercial projection thinks that being on stage is fun, and adds, “I like to be with friends in Drama.”

Kaylin L. was the only actor who admitted that “It’s scary on stage sometimes.” She was still glad to have fun acting with her friends, and enjoyed operating the spotlight, too.

The Scribbler's play critic, Braelyn G. says, "If you did not see the play, you missed out! It was so cool. Lots of WAIS students, parents, and staff were there having a blast. Snow White was a fun princess for kids to dress up as, and two actresses got to play her part - the REAL Snow White played by Jennifer S. and another Snow White (who only "plays her on TV") played by Chloe S. If you love drama then this is definitely the club for you. Lots of actors did a good job in the play, but the seven dwarfs were so funny. They even had a dwarf named Bob; he was my fav. I give the show a 105/100"

If you are a fifth or sixth grade student, and would like to be part of the next play, join drama club during the next introductory meeting on January 30. The meeting will be held from 2:40-3:00 in room 707.

STUDENTS AND STAFF SUPPORT TOYS FOR TOTS DRIVE

Toys for Tots is an organization run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve. Each year, they bring in large bins to schools to collect unwrapped toys for children whose parents can't afford to buy toys themselves. Wilson students and staff have brought in many different toys that can suit so many children.

It’s very generous to donate toys to kids that are much less fortunate. This is one of the many reasons that people donate to charities like these. A few U.S Marines come to our school to drop the box off. Later, they will pick the box up to deliver to children.

The founders of the Toys for Tots organization is Bill Hendricks and Diane Hendricks. The program was founded in 1947, to encourage donations for Christmas time. Since then, over 512 million toys have been donated.

The Toys For Tots drive at WAIS ended on Wednesday, December 12th. It was a HUGE success! Thank you to everyone who decided to help and give to the unfortunate children in need.

She was nominated several times this year by Mrs. Housel, who says, “Mackenzy has been a welcoming classmate to all students, including new students to our district. She is helpful to anyone she is near and continues to show maturity in all situations. Mackenzy is such a hard worker. She never gives up and loves to learn. She is friendly to all of her classmates and is a true display of what being a warrior is all about!"

In 6th grade, our Warrior of the Month is Halle W. She was nominated by Mrs. Schneck for being a hardworking student who gives her best every day. Madison is conscientious and consistently turns in high quality work."

And finally, in 8th grade, our Warrior of the Month is Makenna S. She was nominated by Mrs. Zane, who writes, “Makenna is an inspiring student who is always willing to help.
