5:30 PM - Photographing War & Peace - The Art and Peace Seminar Series returns to discuss the role of photography in war and peace. In the first hour, Carlos Saavedra, a Colombian documentary photographer, will exhibit his work on the Colombian Civil War and discuss how art challenges dominant narratives in conflict settings. In the second hour, Dr. Samuel Ritholtz (Oxford) and Dr. Milli Lake (London School of Economics) will join the conversation, sharing their experiences with art and peace in Colombia and Sub-Saharan Africa, respectively. 6 PM - 7 PM: Sheldonian Series: Democracy - The Sheldonian Series is a new termly event convened by the Vice-Chancellor aimed to promote discussions about the big issues of the day, informed by our commitment to free and inclusive speech, diversity of thought and the vibrant exchange of ideas. This event is open to all students and staff, and will feature scholars and voices from a range of fields and viewpoints. 4 PM: The International Transmission of Democratic Values: Evidence from African Migration to Europe - This paper investigates the effect of rising anti-immigrant sentiment in European democratic host countries on support for democracy in African migrants’ origin communities. We propose a novel methodology to estimate migration stocks from sub-national areas of origin to any possible country in the world based on Google trends data. 1 PM: C.S. Lewis’s Influence on The Lord of the Rings - In 1954 the first two volumes of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings were published (The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers). To celebrate this event, and following on from last year’s Tolkien seminars, Exeter College – Tolkien’s undergraduate college – is proud to host a series of free lunchtime talks organised by the Faculty of English on The Lord of the Rings. Open to the public these talks are aimed at going deeper in some key aspects of the novel, Tolkien as a writer, and some of the spin-offs it has generated. 5 PM: 'Gaza, a war on healthcare' - Nick Maynard, Debbie Harrington and Rebecca Ingliss have many years of experience of travelling to Gaza to teach medical students and provide humanitarian medical care, including work at Al Aqsa Hospital in Gaza since October 7th, 2023. They will talk about their experiences, and specifically about the devastating impact of the direct targeting of the health care system and healthcare workers in Gaza.
