You may consider working as an intern or volunteer during term time. Volunteering, or working in a small local business, can bring you into the community in rewarding ways. However, you may find your tutorial work to be exceptionally time consuming and therefore not conducive to combining with part-time work. Some students have managed to find work offering limited hours at coffee shops in Summertown or the city centre. Working during the two short vacations (over Christmas and Easter) is an option as well.
Your employer will usually require copies of your ID (passport) and Student Visa BRP at application and contractual stages. They will also only be able to pay you into your UK bank accounts in most cases for UK payroll and tax purposes. Your Visa will normally restrict hours of work to a maximum of 20 hours per week during term. There is no restriction out of term time.
Be wary of the legitimacy of “cash-in-hand” jobs – feel free to check things through with the Director of Administration if you’re unsure.
Employers will require you to obtain a National Insurance Number to legally work in the UK. You can apply for this online: www.gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number.
