During Orientation, you will be issued a University ID Card that will provide you with access to all of the Exeter College facilities, including the library. Your University ID Card will also be the means by which you order and pay for meals in hall and any dining events within College.
Located in the entrance to College. Ask the Porters for any information concerning the College, or pick up info brochures for performances and events. Notice boards for various sports teams are located here, as are your pigeonholes.
This is considered to be the nicest spot in the College, and very likely one of the nicest (along with Magdalen Deer Park and Christ Church Meadow) in the whole University. Unlike the front quad, you can walk on the grass here. There are lightweight benches and tables scattered about, making the Fellows' Garden an ideal place for reading, relaxing, or having lunch on warm days. The view of the Radcliffe Camera is unparalleled- especially at dusk when lights illuminate the city. Enter at staircase 5, and walk straight through (past the JCR on the left) to the outside. It closes at 7:00pm.
Essentially, this is a charge account. You may charge various items- such as society charges, ball tickets, sports clothing, and team photographs- to your 'battels' at Exeter. Your Battels will be added to your Williams term bill at the end of the academic year automatically, so there is no need for you to pay them directly in Oxford.
All WEPO students are assigned a small locker for the year. Locker keys will be issued during orientation. The lockers are located near the bathrooms, below the JCR. Many WEPO students leave their academic gowns in their lockers; since you'll usually only need the gown for formal hall it's convenient to keep it at Exeter. Don't lose your locker key! You'll need to return it at the end of the year, or else you'll be charged for a replacement. Lockers are not to be shared or exchanged.
Commoners' gowns used for formal dining at Exeter College (and for meeting the Rector) are issued to you on arrival for your use during the academic year. If the gown is not returned at the end of the academic year or returned in such poor condition as to require a replacement, the cost will be charged to your Williams Term Bill.
Located under Hall, the bar has recently been refurbished. This is the centre of College social life. It looks like a medieval crypt with a pool table, football table, and various arcade games. Prices here are much lower than at the pubs (£1.50 or less per pint). Often crowded, it's an easy place to socialize and meet Exeter students- this is where most Exeter students begin their evenings out. It's also the site of 'bops' during several Fridays each term. The bar tends to be more popular at lunch for WEPO students than the regular hall, and serves billed baguettes, soup, salads, and soft drinks. You can use your Oxford meal plan allowance towards these purchases.
Exeter has several public computes, installed with a range of modern office applications, in the Balsdon Room which is near the Saskatchewan Room. To get to either room, you go down a staircase in the second quad (just past the Rector's Lodgings). Both rooms are in the same underground corridor. You'll be assigned a password at the start of the year that enables you to use the Exeter computer lab.
Remember to lock and secure your laptops with the 'Compulocks' to avoid theft, and lock your screen to hide any sensitive materials from sight. Do not leave materials out in libraries or computer labs; use your locker to store your books and materials when you are not using them.
Instrumentalists and singers can practice in the music rooms. Turl St. has a music room, but there is a nicer one at Cohen Quad. If you're a musician who is going to want a place to practice regularly, it's recommended that you gain access to the Faculty of Music (just explain why you need it and they'll give you access via your Bod card). The facilities are much, much nicer- real practice rooms and everything! The Music Faculty is past Christ Church on St. Aldates.
The Gothic revival style chapel is one of the highlights at Exeter. It's worth stopping in to look around, and the building is almost always open during the day. The Exeter College Chaplain, Reverend Andrew Allen, is a strong friend to our programme and is available to students of all religious backgrounds. He works with the other Welfare Officers at the College, and is always happy to help. You can find his contact details here.
