한 사람을 이해하기 위해서

우리는 함께한 시간이 길면, 그 사람을 잘 안다고 착각하기 쉽다.

태어나 지금까지 많은 사람을 만나며 관계를 맺었다. 여러 관계 중 가장 이상한 관계는 일하며 만난 사람과의 관계다. 일반적으로 그 사람이 나에게 해를 끼치지 않는 이상, 그가 무슨 생각을 하든, 어떤 감정을 느끼든 관여하지 않는다. 꽤 긴 시간을 함께 보냈지만 말이다. 물론 직장에서 만나서 친구가 되기도 하지만, 상하관계라던가, 거래처 사람이라던가 굉장히 미묘한 사이. 특히 한국 사회에서 직장에서 만난 사람과 친구가 될 확률이 얼마나 높을까 생각해본다.

A와 나와의 관계도 그랬다. 우린 꽤 친하게 7년을 같은 직장에서 같이 일을 하는 사이였다. 우린 가족보다 더 자주 본 관계임이 틀림없으나 서로의 마음과 감정을 공유해본 적은 없다. 그리고 12년이 지난 지금에서야 처음으로 서로의 감정을 공유했다.

이번 작업은, A가 직장에서 어떤 생각을 하며 하루를 보냈는지 쓴 한 달간의 글로 이루어져 있다. 현재 A의 동료는 A가 어떤 마음으로 하루를 보내는지 이해하지 못한다. 과거의 나처럼 말이다. 이 글을 읽는다면 A에 대해 조금은 이해할 수 있을지도 모른다.

하지만 A의 글은 쉽게 읽을 수 없도록 구성되었다. 모든 문장은 단어로 쪼개져 한 문장을 읽으려면 많은 페이지를 넘겨야 한다. 많은 사람이 귀찮아서 읽는 걸 포기할 수도 있다.

To Understand a Person.

It might be under an illusion that you understand a person who has known each other for a long time.

We have relationship with others since we were born. The most interesting and strange thing is relationship between co-workers. In general – at least in Korea, people do not care about other co-workers’ feeling, thought or what happens to them, unless they might harm yourself. Sometimes co-workers become friends but most of us know that is extremely hard to happen in such a vertical social structure or competitive system.

Relationship between A who was my ex-co-worker was exactly same as usual. We had worked for 7 years and were quite close. But we had never shared feelings even though we spent more time than families. We started to share feelings and experiences what we had been through during working, 12 years after we have known each other.

This work is composed with A’s texts about what had happened to A during last June. Perhaps co-workers of A do not understand until they read A’s texts, like I did not. Someone who reads A’s might understand some part of A’s life.

However, A’s texts are composed not easy to read by consisted with fragmented sentences. You have to turn over hundreds pages on which only few words are written to read and to understand A. Most people might give up reading them all.
