Gwang Ju Biennale 2018 <Imagined Borders>
I was at Gwang Ju for the Biennale during the weekends. As there were 11 curators directing the biennale, the exhibition differed from one to another so it's a little bit difficult to comment it as a whole. All the exhibitions differed a lot from the selection of the artist, to how the works were displayed. All the curators had their vision and interpretation of the theme, and for some, I thought the curators's ideas were too dominating which made some of the exhibitions a bit blend. I actually liked the pavilions better than the main exhibitions. I went to see a site-specific, GB commissioned work by Apichatpong Weerasethakul at an old army hospital and it really had an impact. I was impressed at how the artist was able to make a strong delivery to the audience jus by doing subtle interventions of the space.
Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT)
NDT is one of the leading dance companies today and their main company, NDT1, came to perform in Seoul. I enjoyed seeing <Stop-Motion> in person, the representative work from the current choreographers, Paul Lightfoot and Sol León. The performance had a lot of visual contexts that were layered and I liked how the whole performance engaged with the audience by building up and breaking tension in a poetic way. It was also interesting to see how they used projectors and videos to correlate different elements in a dance performance.
