Hans Haacke was one of the early members of E.A.T. He was interested in using sculpture to express the phenomena of natural energy, such as eapansion and contraction of materials due to condensation, precipitation, evaporation, and theperature change. Haacke felt that he needed technology to implement his ideas and was introduced to the engineers at Bell Laboratories.
<Ice table> is a device that responds to changes in the surrounding environment, such as light, temperature, and humidity, and was created in collaboration with one of the engineers.
I think the ice table is a miniature Earth. Because the earth is surrounded by the atmosphere and the atmosphere is composed of precipitation, evaporation, and temperature which are important elements of his work.
I usually saw many works that express human relationships, feelings, and inner stories, and I did such things as well. However, Hans excluded human emotions and sought to construct a work based on verifiable facts. This unfamiliarity makes this work interesting.
I felt pressure that I have to be honest and persuade others while I made a work about my thinking or emotion.
So, this semester I would rather work on scientific facts and phenomena than on human emotions.
