My artistic process begins with reflection, research and sometimes allowing myself to freely express. I think about my experiences, what is happening around me and my emotions. Immersing myself in the artistic process is demanding, enjoyable, comforting, rewarding and a mixture of emotions and allows me to realize and understand the world around me. I am drawn to traditional Madhubani art, with its intricate details and the opportunities for storytelling. Madhubani artwork always invites closer observation, whether it is a fawn’s blanket or the adorned clothes the people style. Madhubani art has allowed me to stay connected to my roots while sharing our beautiful culture with others. With each project, I learn so much more my family's culture and history.
The Land’s Embrace captures a village life in India and is carefully rendered in the traditional Madhubani art style. It highlights scenes such as children playing in the open fields, a village well where people gather to fetch water, and a sacred temple. The elements of my artwork are inspired by my own cherished memories in my grandparents hometown, which include playing with my cousins, visiting temples with my family, and engaging in discussions about the rich culture such as the music, art and dance. I named this painting The Land’s Embrace, because the spirit of the land is upheld by the community, which includes the community of the schools, the temples, and the people who live in the village. It is upheld by the connections within these communities, and the traditions which bring them together.
