Grade 7
My name is Riya. I am a 7th grader at Gateway Middle School. My journey into Madhubani art is a unique one. I always loved doing realistic art, especially of animals. I would spend hours on it, trying to capture every little detail. During a visit to a friend's place, the Madhubani Elephant and Deer heads that adorned the wall in their house caught my eye. The colors, patterns, and stories on them were captivating, and I was inspired to learn the art. Madhubani art continually challenges my creativity as I strive to integrate my ideas into my paintings while adhering to the traditional art form's boundaries.
Vainika
This Madhubani painting titled Vainika, Sanskrit for a veena player, is the soulful expression of a woman playing the Indian classical string instrument, veena.
Set against an ancient Indian temple, this composition reflects a spiritual ambience. The backdrop comes alive with the vibrant hues of the setting sun and lush green mountains. The heart of this composition is a graceful woman, adorned in traditional Indian attire and jewelry, who sits gracefully by the water in a meditative stillness, her fingers deftly handling the strings of the veena. Her poise and inner harmony suggest that her music is a devotional offering to the divine. The gentle dog calmly resting beside her adds a sense of warmth. To sum up, this piece of art binds deep-rooted elements of the Hindu culture like devotion, music, and architecture in one.
