Grade 5
My name is Ruthvi, and I am a 7th grader at Gateway Middle School. My passion for art began with sketching lifelike dogs, capturing every detail, and I loved to see it come to life on paper. When I first spotted a friend's Madhubani artwork, the colors and patterns fascinated me and sparked my interest. My journey in Madhubani art has taught me to think very differently about the way I approach art. It allows me to explore our rich Indian culture not only through researching for my artwork, but also through the work of other artists who learn with me.
Mandala symbolizes the universe or a divine realm in Hinduism. This colorful illustration of the Mandala represents a paradise of harmony through incorporating national symbols of India. At the center of the Mandala is the peacock, the national bird of India. Adorned in intricate Madhubani designs and vivid colors, the peacock represents grace, prosperity, peace, and wisdom. Surrounding the peacock, a series of alternating thick and thin concentric circles radiate outward, each filled with traditional motifs.
One thick ring surrounding the peacock features evenly spaced fish in delicate detail, symbolizing fertility and life. Another ring showcases a parade of birds symbolizing spiritual freedom and the interconnectedness of life. The thin rings have unique, colorful border patterns. Encircling these rings are flourishing leaves and flowers, indicating nature's bounty and a protective, fertile boundary of this sacred paradise. Completing the composition, the Lotus, the national flower of India, frames the Mandala at all four corners. Its petals, rendered in warm orange tones and checkered patterns, enhance the auspiciousness of the entire scene. The piece resonates with traditional Madhubani intricacies, exuding cultural depth and artistry.
