Letter to all Parents and Guardians

 Religious Education

From the Office of

Catechetical Ministry

Dear Parents and Guardians of Saint John XXIII Religious Education Family:

Welcome to the new Catechetical year. Thank you for acknowledging your matrimonial promise along with your baptismal promise and the call by God’s Holy Spirit to raise your child in the formation of Catholic faith. It is a blessing for us as an entire community to endeavor to assist you and be a resource for your family.

In this journey of faith through the formation process of sacrament preparedness, it is the objective of the Religious Education ministry to work together with the families in the formation of their students.

As parents or guardians, you are the first catechist as well as the primary educators of your children. Therefore, it is essential to remember that the best catechesis is done in the home. This must include the parents openly demonstrating to their children the practice of their faith in the home, in the church and also in the world.

Thank you for the dedication, time, and attention you will be giving to your children. They will be forming their conscience to be children of God, disciples of Jesus Christ. The scriptures tell us that God rewards those who take seriously the actions done to educate, promote and encourage our children and youth to be good Christians and excellent citizens.

Sincerely in Christ Jesus Our Lord

The Religious Education Staff

St. John XXIII

 Parish mission Statement:

We, the people of Saint John XXIII, are a multi-ethnic Roman Catholic seek to nourish the Gospel of Jesus Christ in all the families and people, so that they can rejoice in the love of God in this life and in the life to come. We endeavor to do this by fostering an authentic Christian stewardship, the Christian education of our youth and adults through Resurrection Academy and other programs, outreach to the poor and needy, and the celebration of the Sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist.

Religious Education mission Statement:

St. John XXIII Catholic Parish Religious Education ministry seeks to nourish the Gospel of Jesus Christ in all families and persons, who seek assistance with preparation for the sacraments, those seeking general faith formation and those seeking further instruction in the faith. It is through the words commanded by Christ himself, apostolic statements and the mission of the Holy church to offer assistance and to be a resource for families so that parents may exercise their duty as primary educators of their children. It is with joy we endeavor to foster inspiration for their spiritual growth through formation, with an emphasis on having an encounter with Christ and to live an authentic Christian lifestyle.

You and your child are embarking on the continuation of their faith journey in this life. There are many things which may be done to help growth in the faith. Learning is one part. But the Catholic faith is more than book learning and memorization. Although these are important because this is where a person begins to form an understanding about the faith.  The most important aspect is to empress upon your child that God calls everyone and there must be a response to come and know Him and not simply about Him. So, Faith Formation is important because it stress an encounter with Christ. It probably will appear as normal as day-to-day instruction, but this is where a person begins to encounter Christ. It seemed the same way when Jesus Apostles first started out and Jesus was teaching them.

FAITH FORMATION:

The purpose of this Faith Formation is to allow a person to be ready for a very sacred moment with God in the sacraments. The Sacraments are not a rite of passage in life nor as in the case of Holy Communion a one-time event to be experienced and then forgotten. Faith formation includes readiness, involving the learning of the faith of which must be practiced. It involves an extended period. Attending one (1) class a week and going to Holy Mass is not enough for good faith formation. The greater amount of time spent in formation is done with the family and in the home.

The purpose of the Ministry of Catechesis is to assist the parents of children and youth with the process of faith formation. Particularly in the area of sacrament preparation. The catechist as a volunteer servant, endeavors to provide some details in the areas of the faith which will to allow that person to become disciples of Christ. The catechist provides direction and resources, but it is the parents who must afford the time to assist the child or youth in the practice of faith their daily life and reinforce what is being taught.

The proper living of any Christian Parent is to be involved in their children’s life during their growing years. This is especially true for involvement concerning the One true Faith given to us by Our Lord Jesus Christ and their overall education.

The parents are the primary educators of their children.[1] The church has declared this as a right for the parents and a continuation of their sacred matrimonial vows. Scripture is also very clear on this as well. The principal factor is utilization of time. Sacramental preparation done during the week allows for only 1 hour of instruction. Whereas in a typical household, aside from sleeping and school, that leaves about approximately 62 hours for other things in a given week. The utilization and management of this balance of time is given to the parents/guardian.  It becomes their God given right to spend some of this time to reinforce what was taught during catechism.

ATTENDANCE:

Families with students in the Religious Education program must practice their faith as a family. Therefore, all families are required to attend Mass every Sunday and Holy days of obligation. Additionally, in keeping with the precepts of the church, they must support the parish spiritually, financially and with their time and talents.

Students need to be on time. The sessions begin at 6:30 PM and depending on the lesson plan, they will go from one (1) hour to one and one-quarter (1 1/4) hours. Students must never be late more than 5 minutes from the start of class. Exceeding this will be considered a tardy. 3 tardies will count as one unexcused absence and only 2 excused absences are allowed.

A)      If the child is absent due to being sick or extreme family emergency, it is considered an excuse, you must notify the Catechist and the Office to be recorded in their attendance.

B)      For all classes and events, anyone under 18 years must be signed out at the end of each session.

C)      Only authorized persons over 18 years of age will be able to pick up your child.**

D)      In the event of a serious emergency impacting the vicinity, (Earthquake, Fire, Etc.), only an authorized person over 18 years of age will be able to pick up your child.**

For Mass Attendance please avoid slips with Any other kind of Attendance. And do not place slips in the Collection Basket.

We Thank You in advance for your cooperation.

 ACCESS TO THE CAMPUS:

Cooperation is needed to maintain the security of the school. The entrance will be through the hallway. It is a mandatory safety recommendation to escort your student to and from class. The school’s drive-way entrance main gate is kept closed for safety concerns. You will have to park outside of the school grounds (parish parking lot or road).

Since safety is a priority, it is always the case where staff on hand are privileged with information concerning on-campus circumstances. Therefore, all instructions given by volunteer ground attendants, the catechetical team and/or security must be followed. Abject failure or disobedience towards adhering to the instructions can result in the removal of the family from the program. Open argumentative behavior towards appointed staff can result in the family’s removal from the program.

Parents waiting in the parking lot for their children are not allowed to have any other child in their charge “to play” in the parking lot.

In the event multiple activities occur and the school parking area is open, you must follow all parking instructions delivered by the parking attendant, posted security and/or Catechetical Team member. This is for the safety of property and people.

OFFICE HOURS:

The forecasted typical Office hours are:**

Monday, Tuesday 2 pm – 5pm

Thursday: 2 pm – 5pm

* Religious Education Staff only work part time.

** Hours can change due to seasonal demands required by program needs

In Case of An Emergency or Disaster:

 What to do?

a)       Gates and other access points will be closed by the staff on hand. No one will be able to come in or out until everything is ready and the situation has been resolved. Students will be released only to the authorized person(s) listed on the emergency cards and registry.

b)      Please follow the instructions of the Staff and Volunteers: Get in line at the South part of the parking lot, in front of the school office, there are yellow poles. “That’s the only place for adults to assemble to pick up their child.” (NOT ALL OVER THE SCHOOL GROUNDS)

[1] The selection and use of a godparent for First Holy Communion is not part of the liturgy for the celebration of the Rite for First Holy Communion. The encounter of Christ in the Rite of First Holy Communion is personal and belongs first to the person receiving it then to the community who joins them. No person should be singled out or given a place recognized as an honor within this sacrament. To do such an act is a disregard for the purpose of the sacrament and shows a great misunderstanding of the sacrament. To do so also tries to introduce a sign which is not defined as part of the sacrament.

______________________________________________

Selecting Godparents:

It is recommended that if your child is in a year 2 program that you seek a godparent and submit the details at the beginning of the year. Do NOT Wait until the sacrament date is only a few months away. We need the details on all godparents early in the year.

It happens that some parents expect the church to find the godparents. It is not the job of the church to solicit godparents. If you are having trouble getting a godparent (Technically you only need one), then notify the ministry immediately. Do NOT Wait until the sacrament date is only a few months away.

If your youth has been Baptized already and they are looking for a sponsor for Confirmation, they may select one of their baptismal godparents. A single godparent may be used for both Baptism and confirmation.

Safety and Security

Safety Drills:

As required by local ordinance, periodic safety drills must be performed. These will occur as expeditiously as possible so as not to greatly impact the presentation and instruction times for catechesis. Policies regarding safety rules are mandated by state and local officials. Policies are issued in direct compliance with these ordinances.

Campus access:

Per mandated ordinances all persons on campus especially minors must be accounted for in case of an emergency. Any person along with any one under-aged is not allowed to remain on the campus unless they are in an instruction session.  Parents waiting must wait in their cars in the parking lot. Parents with smaller children or otherwise are not allowed to remain on the campus unless they are participating in one of the sessions.

Attendance:

Every student must be accounted for at all sessions and events. Guardians are not allowed to “drop off” their student. They must sign them in per attendance policy and in keeping with mandated ordinances. Any adult who “drops off” a student without a registered Guardian ‘sign-in’ will be called to return to the campus to complete the sign-in. Continued infraction will result in the student being removed from the program.

Students are not allowed to wander from the campus or field location for all prescribed sessions and events. For their safety any student attending a session or event must be signed out.

Fire Alarms:

The installed fire alarm system is intended for real “Fire” emergencies only. It is not to be played with or tampered with by anyone. Handling of this is for instructed individuals only or in the case of a life-threatening Fire emergency.

Any perpetrator causing a false alarm will result in a $3000.00 fine by the County of San Bernardino Fire Marshal and the costs for repair, replacement and reset of the alarm station.

INFORMATION

We endeavor to do this by fostering: an authentic Christian Stewardship, the Christian education of our youth and adults through Resurrection Academy and other programs, outreach to the poor and needy, and the celebration of the Sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist.

It is with joy we endeavor to foster inspiration for their spiritual growth through formation, with an emphasis on having an encounter with Christ and to live an authentic the Christian lifestyle.
