Service Hours
The purpose of "Service hours" is to provide the candidate opportunity to acheive an opening awareness to encoutner Christ through service. The emphasis of service is in the context of of the Spiritual Works of Mercy and the Corporal Works of Mercy. In addition, the the emphasis also includes the "Two great Commandments" (Luke 10:25-37) given by Our Lord Jesus Christ himself.
Service will be considered Three areas:
At Home
At Church
In the Community
The emphasis for hours At Home is to allow candidates to grow in maturity through the undertaking of responsibilities and contributing to the wellbeing and welfare of the family/home which is the Domestic church.
At Church service hours is allow them to have experiences through willful participation in the Mystical Body of Christ that they were baptized into which is the Church.
In the Community service hours provide an opportunity for the candidate to have a new outlook as they participate in the world around them in order to bring the Light of Christ into that world.
Point System
A point system will be used for srvice hours.
16 points for Year 1 Confirmation candidates
26 points for Year 2 Confirmation candidates
For year 2 Candidates:
26 points for Year 2 Confirmation
You can only count No more then 1/2 (13 for year 2) of points for At Home service.
At least 8 At Church service points must be done in a Church ministry.
At least 2 points of In the Community service must be done through some community participation or outreach.
For year 1 Candidates:
16 points for Year 1 Confirmation
You can only count No more then 1/2 (8 for year 1) of points for At Home service.
At least 4 At Church service points must be done in a Church ministry.
At least 1 point of In the Community service must be done through some community participation or outreach.
At Home Service points:
Service done at home to assist on the family’s wellbeing will be counted as 1/2 points. This means every accumulated time of an hour spent assisting in the home is 1/2 a point. This means two hours of accumulated chores, help and assistance at home is worth one (1) point.
When the candidate extends additional help around the home then this can be counted as service hours.
What can be counted as At Home service points?
Keeping their rooms tidy (This applies only to those youth that can use some improvement in this area); or assisting a younger sibling with keeping their room tidy.
Washing dishes, setting/clearing the table, putting groceries away
Doing Laundry
Dusting & Vacuuming, moping (Swifting)
Keeping the bathroom clean.
Assisting with car repairs
Taking care of the yard (Mowing, edging, trimming bushes.)
Helping a younger sibling with their catechism.
Helping the parent’s dress/feed/bath an infant sibling.
Helping mom and dad with projects around the house like, painting, plumbing, or fixing things in the house.
At Church Service points:
Service in a ministry counts as a service point. Every hour spent in a ministry counts as one (1) point.
An example participation in the liturgy of the mass in the choir, as an usher, lector or alter server counts as one (1) point.
What can be counted as At Church service points?
choir, as an usher, lector or alter server
Assiting with Primary Religious Education on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (One full evening counts as one (1) point).
At Community Service points:
Community points can be garnered when the candidate participates in community functions outside the home, this includes school service clubs, scouting, public libraries, even at church. Every 2 hours counts as a point. Remember by your Christ-like attitude you become a "light unto a darkened world."
What can be counted as At Community service points?
When the candidate assists in a project at school or participate in a service club through school. (Get approval from the Confirmation Assistants first)
Scouting (Ie. Eagle projects)
Visiting homes for the aged.
Helping an aged or neighbor or relative in need with yard cleanup, grocery shoipping or house cleaning.
Assisting in Special Education classroom settings
Peer Tutoring at school
Helping the Church at Summer fest. *(Hour at Summer fest = 1 point)
Helping the primary Religious Education and Confirmation programs with the setup and cleanup for retreats, orientations or any Religious Education Events.
