Natural Selection with Clip birds (Will Badgett)

Title: Clipbirds!!

Principle(s) Investigated: List all principles that apply to this activity.

Standards: HS-LS4-2.

Construct an explanation based on evidence that the process of evolution primarily results from four factors: (1) the potential for a species to increase in number, (2) the heritable genetic variation of individuals in a species due to mutation and sexual reproduction, (3) competition for limited resources, and (4) the proliferation of those organisms that are better able to survive and reproduce in the environment.

LS4.B: Natural Selection

    • Natural selection occurs only if there is both (1) variation in the genetic information between organisms in a population and (2) variation in the expression of that genetic information—that is, trait variation—that leads to differences in performance among individuals

Materials:

  • 20 large bulldog binder clips No. 3—2 5/8 inches
  • 20 medium-sized bulldog binder clips No. 2—2 1/4 inches
  • 20 small-sized bulldog binder clips No. 1—1 1/4 inches
  • Marbles
  • Rice
  • Beans
  • plastic cups

Procedure:

1. Group the Students into groups of 6 students.

2. Assign each person a direction and a size of beak.

3. Pass out appropriate beak size and a cup (stomach)

4. Have a tub of Food with Marbles rice and beans. For first season.

5. Have 15 seconds to gather all the food they can.

6. Repeat with season 2 and record results

7. Repeat with season 3 and record results

8. Repeat with season 4 and record results

9. Look on quick write and compare result

Student prior knowledge: The students will need to have some information about Charles Darwin and some of his early studies with evolution. The might need some background with genetics and heritability of traits. This can be used as an opening conversation to introduce genetics or into ecology.

Explanation:

This experiment is used to show how different finches might have different

Give a thorough explanation of the experiment or demonstration. Your explanation should be written to give your fellow teachers a solid understanding and include greater detail than what you might provide for your secondary students. Make certain to include equations whenever pertinent.

Questions & Answers:

How might does the uses of Give three thought-provoking questions and provide detailed answers.

Applications to Everyday Life:

1. This can be used to introduce how populations evolve over time to met the environment that they are in.

2. Look a how humans have taken control of natural selections to make breeds of dog and other domesticated other animals.

3.This could be used to show how that just because a tool can do the job does not mean that it is the best tool for the job. You can use it to show the scientific process by testing new variations to see if they work.

Photographs:

Include photos and diagrams that illustrate the how the investigation is performed.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

DO NOT upload the photos to this site!!! If you do, they will be removed.

DO upload photos into the album linked in the left sidebar. Once you have uploaded a photo, click on the same album link, find your photo, right click on it, and "copy image address" (copy image URL) and then use this link when inserting the photo. The photo must be visible when viewing your page. A link to the photo does not suffice.

Videos:

Include a video of your investigation

IMPORTANT NOTE: Embed a Youtube Video that illustrates the procedure and results. This video should reside in your YouTube account and should be viewable by all. You may use a video in another persons YouTube channel if the video is better quality than what you can make.
