When unusual or unforeseen circumstances affect your ability to work, you need to know how you, and we, will respond.
This list isn't exhaustive, but we consider disruptions to be:
Adverse weather conditions such as heavy snow fall or flooding
Disruption to public transport due to maintenance or strikes
Road closures due to serious accidents or police incidents
You should make reasonable efforts to attend work, taking into consideration:
The distance involved, location of your home and your work
Prevailing weather conditions and weather forecast for the remainder of the day
Time of day
Alternative routes and transportation available
Information and advice from police and any other relevant authorities
Your safety is important, so please don't take unnecessary risks. If you are genuinely unable to get to work, please call your manager as soon as possible.
If, after taking everything into account, you decide to stay at home, your manager will discuss options with you, which may include:
Take holiday
Take unpaid leave
Work from home (where practical)
Make up any hours you missed back
We'll do all we can to remain open during any disruption, but if we do have to make the decision to send you home or ask you not to attend work we will pay you as normal. Depending on the circumstances we may also ask you to work in another location. If you happen to be on holiday on a day your workplace is closed, you will not be entitled to a day off in lieu
We'll monitor the situation closely and we may allow you to leave early if your safety would be at risk by staying. You can ask your manager if you can leave early (for example if your child's nursery or school has to close) and we'll always try to grant permission where possible. If you do leave early your manager may allow you to make up the time later, use holiday or take unpaid leave.
Please do not leave without discussion with your manager - this would be considered unauthorised absence and subject to disciplinary action.
When considering decisions regarding a disruption and its impact, we'll try to give consideration to personal circumstances, such as childcare or other caring responsibilities. if you have a mobility or health issue that may be made worse by adverse weather, we'll also take this into account.
