Gospel Reflection 2019/2020

SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD

21 May 2020

[Matthew 28: 16-20]

Today’s Gospel recalls the Great Commission of Jesus to His disciples,

“Go, therefore, make disciples of all nations;

baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you.”

Jesus has entrusted His mission to all His disciples; you and I included! We are called, chosen, and commissioned by Jesus to go forth and make Him known to the whole world. Christ’s mission is our mission – it is the mission of every Christian.

However, we cannot give what we do not have. Only by remaining in communion with the Trinitarian God, can we win souls for Christ.

1) To make disciples, we must first be good disciples ourselves.

2) To bring people to the waters of baptism, we must first live and live out the sacramental life.

3) To teach, we must first know and observe the commandments, especially the commandments of love.

Let not the Great Commission of Christ be “our Great Omission”. Let our fervent prayer always be,

“Lord Jesus Christ,

may our lips proclaim your mystery,

may our deeds reveal your glory,

and may our lives tell your story.”
