The Ilmatar (pronounced eel-mah-tar) are 7 ft tall with long limbs and ashen white skin. They are an androgynous species and have no gender. Their world, Sisu , is a jungle planet and it is said that even the air tries to kill you there. This is in contrast to the Ilmatar who are peaceful and have the ability to change the color of skin to perfectly camouflage themselves in their surroundings. In their early history they used this to hide from dangers on their home planet but now since they have progressed past the need to hide and live in urban areas they rarely use this ability to hide, some have even forgotten how to. In recent history among the younger Ilmatar, it has become common to change their look to have a combination of two different species (IE, Siofra ears and Diethelm beard.) However it is considered an extreme taboo to make one’s self look completely like another species; this is considered deceitful and against the tenets of Sisu, when this is done they will leave their face looking just enough like an Ilmatar to tell who they are. It is not considered deceitful if all-party involved know of the deception such as acting and this has led Ilmatar to be sought-after for this profession. They are very family-oriented since they have no gender, family hierarchy is usually determined by age. It is not uncommon for multiple generations of one family to live under one roof.
The Ilmatar are the only species that can be born with the ability to use the portal path. Those that are born this ability when they come of age leave home to a live-in apprenticeship with the Portal Guild. They are taught how to make Portals and the rules of what can and can’t be transported
There was a sizable population of Ilmatar living on the Frontier when the long night happened. This is because of how family-oriented they are, most of them were living with the heads of the family that were part of the local portal guild or they are studying the unique ecosystem of the Frontier. Since the Ilmatar is one of the longer-lived species, some of them remember the long Night and all that they lost being the first the darkness chose to attack. This has made some of them examine the tenets of Sisu and found a different interpretation about non-aggression. Since the darkness attacked the Ilmatar first, would it not be a defensive action to attack back and try to take back what was lost?
