In the world of Nexus Unbound, there are multiple worlds. It is more of a universe than a world. But after certain event (Long Night) it has been reduced to one world while the others are still around, they are hard to access as of current. Either way, this LARP is about exploring, fighting and just having fun and we hope you find it as fun as we have. As you continue through this introduction, hopefully it will answer all your questions in how to proceed and get ready for your first LARPing adventure. with us, We can't wait to meet you and your character in this world of imagination and adventure.
RP stands for Role Play or Role Playing. Most people know this from tabletop games like Pathfinder, Warhammer and many more than can be listed. Others might know the meaning from video games: Role Play Game (RPG), Japanese Role Play Game (JRPG). When you role play you take on the "role" of a character, that can be a hero in your group's party such as in D&D or the main protagonist in a video game. You are expected to act as that character with your choice reflecting who that character is.
LARP stands for Live Action Role Play. How this works is, those that LARP, get up and go out to a park or campground, a number of outdoor places, dressing up as a character they created and being that character. No controller, no pen, no paper, just you physically portraying your character. This may sound scary but it's no different than impromptu acting. Remember it is a skill and it may take a little bit of work to get used to it but the reward after a fun roleplay game is well worth the work you put into it. This is a big interactive, collaborative, story telling experience that you help create with other players and plot members alike.
Now the basics of RP and LARP are covered and the differences are done, we are going to go over to import definitions that are important to understand. First is In Character (IC) and Out of Character (OOC), also known as Out of Game (OOG). The terms are fairly basic and easy. In character means you are interacting and being your character. Out of Character means you are interacting and being yourself and not your character. This is usually shown with hand signals (Hand on your head or hand held up with fingers crossed) or an orange headband (Explained in Headbands ). If you aren't showing these signs, it will be assumed that you in character. This is to help immersion and for people to understand who you are talking as. Also, if you do something bad, dumb, so forth as your character, consequences can happen. You are not allowed to just go OOG or OOC to avoid it. That is just cheating and against the code of conduct.
Players use headbands to represent in-game states in the Nexus Unbound LARP. For more detailed information can be found on the Headbands page.
Orange: This indicates that the person wearing it is Out Of Game(OOG). A character can not interact with someone wearing an OOG headband, nor are they aware of the existence of that person.
White:This indicates that the character is a spirit. They have no corporeal form, and unless your character has the appropriate skill “See Spirits” or something granting your character that effect, your character is unaware of them.
Blue: Represents invisibility. The wearer is present but cannot be seen or interacted with by other characters.
Pink: This indicates that the character is ethereal, or translucent. The ethereal character is able to pass through all barriers, and can be interacted with by magic. Purely physical interactions pass right through this character.
Green: This indicates that the character has used the Feign Death feat and is a shade. Shades are undetectable, even by other shades, and cannot interact with the world in any way, but can see and hear the world normally.
Players are required to sign a release of liability form to for their first Nexus Unbound LARP event. Players can sign the form at check in if they do not already have one on file. There is also an optional form allowing photographers to use a player’s likeness in promotional material.
Players are required to pay a site fee for each event, which can be paid in advance online or at check in.
Recommended personal items include medications, sleeping equipment, food, and personal hygiene products. Most event sites provide thin sleeping mattresses in a shared bunk house, so players should consider bringing blankets, sleeping bags, and other comfort items.
Food is another important consideration for players. Saturday night is a potluck, and players are asked to bring a dish if they are able to. Players who cannot bring a dish will be asked to help with cleanup. Players are also recommended to bring five other meals to cover meals from Friday night through Sunday morning, and snacks are recommended to keep energy levels up. More information about the potluck theme is usually posted on Nexus Unbound’s Facebook and Discord pages.
Players are required to have four headbands available to indicate their character’s in-game state. The colors and their corresponding states are consistent with our conversation history:
• Orange: Out of Game
• White: Spirit
• Yellow: Non-Combatant
• Blue: Invisible
After a player’s third event, they are required to have physical representations (phys-reps) for all of their character’s tags and to meet costuming requirements for their chosen race.
Players are required to provide their own boffers, dart blasters, and spell packets. Players can borrow these items from other players or the plot cabin, and the Nexus Unbound Discord and Facebook pages are good places to find players to borrow from. Boffers must be checked by the safety team at each event before they can be used. Nexus Unbound is a light touch LARP, so boffers must be soft enough to not cause bruising. Latex style boffers and most professionally made LARP boffers pass the safety check, but we advise against using boffers from the brands “Hero’s Edge” and “Calimacil”. “Hero’s Edge” boffers are cheaply made, and “Calimacil” boffers use foam that is too stiff for Nexus Unbound.
Blanket are Skill points (SP) are awarded to players after each game. The amount awarded depends on the player's current SP total. Players start with 75 SP and earn more by attending games.
Nexus Unbound also uses a system of Bribe. Players can earn Bribe for assisting with the game in a number of ways, including:
• Donating money, costumes, props, or other requested or non-requested items
• Running Non-Player Characters (NPCs)
Players can spend Bribe on:
• Skill Points: Players can purchase up to 15 SP per game, but the price per SP increases as the player's total SP goes up.
• Character Rewrites: Players can purchase a partial rewrite for 250 Bribe or a full rewrite at a price that varies depending on the player's total SP. A partial rewrite allows players to reallocate up to 50 SP, 2 Stat Points, and 4 Valor Points. A full rewrite lets players completely rebuild their character or start a new character with a different race and skills while keeping their existing SP and VP totals. Players who create a new character must surrender their old character's tags and can keep up to 200 CP of standard items and one Augment or Exceptional item.
