Once again, we joined in with Neilston Golden Girls for a bit of lunch in Neilston Bowling Club, followed by some musical entertainment from some of the Barrhead Ukulele Group.
For lunch, we had a tasty square sausage and potato scone roll with tea or coffee for lunch, followed by some home baked cake, pancakes, clootie dumpling and rocky road for afters.
Many thanks to Raymond Kerr for organizing the session and to John McLean and the ladies for organizing the food and the kitchen and for baking the cakes.
Here's a few more photos taken on the day:
After lunch was over, the ukulele group played us a range of songs for just over an hour, mostly from the 1950s and 60s, by the likes of Hank Williams, Neil Diamond, The Kinks and many others. Given our age group, it was songs we'd all heard before many times and all of them bringing back memories.
It wasn't just all ukuleles though. There was definitely an accordion player in the mix and I think I spotted a banjolele as well.
We recorded a few of the songs they played like Buono Sera, Your Cheatin' Heart, Bring Me Sunshine, Sweet Caroline and others so here's a playlist of those:
Sadly, we can't find any online details for the Barrhead Ukulele Group so, if anyone out there knows more, then please let us know. There is another local ukulele group called Neilston Strings, also now based in Barrhead, but this wasn't them.
A chat with one of them revealed a connection to East Renfrewshire u3a so this may be them:
They don't accept payment for playing but did accept a donation that they said would go the Barrhead Men's Shed, which is a local charity that encourages people to come together to make, repair and repurpose, supporting projects in their local communities while improving wellbeing, reducing loneliness and combatting social isolation.
