Glasgow Museums Resource Centre #2

Twelve of us visited the Glasgow Museums Resource Centre (GMRC) in Nitshill for the second time and another one-hour tour. This time, our guide was called Billy and he took us into the Art and Paintings pod and the Natural History pod and gave us an entertaining tour filled with lots of information and even some hands-on activities.

The Walrus and the Carpenter Michael went to Nichols and at least one of them got stuffed.

The Arts and Paintings pod is like something out of Men in Black (see the header image above) - just rows and rows of double sided slots full of paintings and stretching the length of the room.

We also got a look at a recent acquisition - a solid iron meteorite (there's a photo of it in the slide show below). It looked like it weighed well over 100 kilograms and we were invited to try and lift it. It didn't go well and most of those that tried failed (Gordon, John A and Raymond). I couldn't resist and did manage to lift it but I'm sure I felt something pop so it wasn't for long.

Billy also let us hold the tusk from a male Narwhal, easily eight feet and more of very heavy ivory. These were once thought to be magical and could neutralize poisons and were used in making the thrones of Danish kings.

Robert holding the Narwhal tusk with Ian and John A looking on.

There's much more to see yet and we'll try and get back to visit some more the pods in the future.
