Largs and Millport

Since the weather was looking nice, a small number of us took the train Glasgow and then on to Largs on the North Ayrshire coast with a view to taking the short ferry trip to Cumbrae and having lunch in Millport.

We were a somewhat reduced group from our normal turnout as we still have a few too unwell to join us and some others had family or other commitments. Still, eight of us made it and we all enjoyed the day out.

On the ferry, just leaving Largs for Cumbrae.

The train journey from Neilston to Largs is a bit long and winding, having to go into Glasgow Central first and then on to the Largs train, all of which takes almost two hours. Getting to Largs by car from Neilston should take under 40 minutes but then we couldn't have enjoyed a refreshing pint with our lunch so...Safety First and the chance to grab a coffee on the way in Central Station won out.

It's only a short walk from Largs train station to the ferry terminal so we decided to cross over to Great Cumbrae right away as it was getting towards lunch time. Caledonian MacBrayne operate the short 10-minute crossing using two roll-on roll-off ferries that just go back and forth every 30 minutes so, being foot-traffic, we just hopped onto the first one to arrive.

Once on the island, we caught the bus down to Millport, which is a few miles from the ferry slip.

Millport seems like a nice wee seaside town, certainly geared towards the tourist market. We had a bit of a wander around and then found a wee beer garden at the back of the Royal George Hotel that was sheltered from the breeze but still sunny.

We ordered some lunch and just passed the time of day sitting in the sun with some good company.

After lunch we had another wee wander around in the sun, just enjoying the nice weather and the sea views. You can see the two Hunterston A nuclear power station towers and Hunterson B from here as well but they're hardly photogenic. Both installations are now closed down.

Looking South you can see Little Cumbrae and there's the Isle of Arran in the background as well.

Once we'd had a wee wander there was time to take some more photos while waiting on the bus back to the ferry.

Back in Largs we had another wee refreshment and then headed home after an enjoyable trip to the Clyde coast in nice weather and with sociable company. It'd have been better with more of us there so more such outings are planned for this Summer if the weather behaves itself.
