The Club Sandwich, also known as the Clubhouse Sandwich, is a timeless American favorite that originated in the late 19th century. Known for its triple layers and bold flavors, this sandwich combines crisp toasted bread, deli meats like turkey and ham, smoky bacon, fresh vegetables, creamy mayonnaise, and cheese. It’s a versatile, filling meal perfect for brunch, lunch, or a casual dinner. Served quartered and held together with toothpicks, the Club Sandwich is as visually appealing as it is delicious.
3 slices of white or whole wheat bread, toasted
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 ounces sliced turkey breast
2 ounces sliced ham
2 slices cooked bacon
2 slices cheddar cheese
2 slices tomato
1 leaf of lettuce
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Toast the Bread
Begin by toasting all three slices of bread until golden brown and crisp.
First Layer
Place one slice of toast on a clean plate. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on it. Layer the turkey slices evenly, then add one slice of cheddar cheese. Top with the tomato slices and sprinkle lightly with salt and pepper.
Second Layer
Add the second piece of toast on top of the tomato layer. Spread mayonnaise on the side facing up. Then layer the ham slices, followed by the crispy bacon and the lettuce leaf.
Final Layer
Spread mayonnaise on one side of the third toast slice and place it mayo-side down on top of the lettuce layer to complete the sandwich.
Assemble and Serve
Gently press the sandwich together. Insert four toothpicks—one in each corner—to hold it in place. Use a sharp knife to slice the sandwich diagonally into four triangular sections. Serve immediately while the toast is still crisp.
This classic Club Sandwich pairs wonderfully with:
A handful of potato chips or French fries
Sweet potato fries for a twist
Coleslaw or a light salad
Pickles or sliced cucumbers
Iced tea, lemonade, or a light beer for a refreshing drink
It’s also easy to pack for picnics, work lunches, or travel, as long as it’s kept chilled.
