It started with needing a mouse/water proof storage box to store my files when I moved to Idaho in 1982. I found a hinged lid storage tote was perfect for a long hanging file rack. Later when I sold my truck camper and purchased a pickup without a cover I need a weather proof storage box. I chose the Action Packer made by Rubbermaid because water would run off the lid.

The hinged lid storage tote works for a stacked storage system. The polyethylene plastic tote came in a variety of colors and measure 21" L x 15" W x 13" H. In the 1980's they cost less than $9 for heavy duty plastic totes from the local Ernst Home Center (a Home Depot like store). Today, a similar 12 gallon tote made by Sterilite is available for about the same price and they also come in larger sizes.
The totes are used for:
File storage where hanging file racks support the file folders
Storage boxes where water would damage contents
Stacking storage for packing material
Stacking storage for opened bags of dry materials used to make pottery.
Ice fishing sled (see Ice fishing).
The Rubbermaid Action Packer are twice the size of the hinged lid totes. They are designed to be weather proof with grooved lid surfaces that allow water to run off. The dimensions of the lids are 26" L x 18" W and 17" H or 24 Gallon. They have double walled lids that are locking. I have found them to be indestructible and they have a lifetime warranty. They are expensive. When I started to buy them in the 1990's the prices were around $36 but current prices are nearly $60.
The action packers are used for:
Lockable storage tote in my pickup bed
All weather storage of pottery supplies and completed pieces under the deck of house
Storage tote for sleeping bags and other camping supplies in basement.
