Measure or weigh clay. I usually work in 9 lb batches of clay.
Adjust laser throwing gauges without bat on wheel.
Put bat on wheel
Center clay and tap twice to make it stick to bat.
Add a little water with sponge and center clay by coning down to base diameter.
Make small divot in center of clay and use thumb to open the clay up to form the bottom of pot.
Dry water from bottom and measure bottom thickness with measuring needle.
Add water to sides and make first pull forming a volcano cone. Use your thumb to compress the rim as you pull.
Add water to sides and make a second pull with the wall straight (no volcano or flair out). Your are getting height to the pot.
Add water to sides and make a third pull to the shape of the pot. Walls should be 1/4 to 3/8 inches thick. You may need to do a forth pull.
With sponge stick remove water from base and at same time use scraper stick to remove slip from outside while moving sponge stick up inside side wall to counteract pressure of scraper stick.
Rinse and squeeze out sponge stick and dry pot bottom again but use credit card instead of scraper stick to smooth outside of pot.
Smooth rim with sponge.
Use round end of scraper stick to make groove at the base of pot and cut a groove with pointed end of stick for the cut off wire.
Lift bat and set aside. Clean water out of wheel tray wit large sponge. Continue to throw pieces until out of clay.
Clean tools out of water bucket and turn off wheel.
Place ware board ware near wheel. Put bat on wheel and cut piece off with cutoff string. Dry hands and lift pot from bat with fingers picking it up from the base. Place pot on ware board.
Scrap clay from bat and return bat to storage rack.
Place ware board in drying rack and dry 8 to 16 hours before trimming. Trimming requires clay hard enough you can not dent it but not so hard your fingernail will not cut it. Cover with plastic bags if drying too fast.
Your weight may vary based on wall thickness and slip. I typically add 10% for the throwing angel.
