For those floundering when using vascular plant keys. Https://flora-id.org/ offers an interactive software that helps through the identification jargon maze when using a dichotomous key. It is my go to identification method. They cover most western states and western Canada plus Virginia. I realize it has been around for 25 years but what is NEW is the Windows version is now FREE to download. Donations are welcome.
Hints for using interactive keys.
Select features that make the plant different.
Use the key for your location. Oregon key may not work for plants collected in Texas.
Take pictures of the plant and unique features before you collect it. My plant collection is mainly pictures with a small sample of the unique features. All the samples fit in a single small coin envelope and plastic coin flip.
