I never owned an edger before purchasing a Black and Decker 20v MAX Cordless Edger Lawn Kit, 1.5 Ah Battery & Charger Included (BCED400C1). I did not have much of a need without sidewalks and paved drive. I used a corded Black and Decker corded edger 50 years ago a few times. I found it was effective but time consuming to use.
Likes include it was easy to use and ran on 1.5 AH 20 volt battery for 20 minutes. The edger cut a half inch deep groove in dry clay soil along an overgrown side walk not previously edged. Total distance edged was +300 ft (from garbage can to cart in photo) before both operator and battery ran out of energy. No major dislikes. Not as powerful as 120 volt plug-in, gas, or high volt battery models but meets my needs as an affordable 20 volt edger.
1/2" depth cut.
Total distance edged was +300 ft.
In August 2023, the edger was used on a 30 feet section of a driveway curb. It performed well and cut a nice grove.
In September 2023, the edger was used along a 400 foot sidewalk without problems. However, when used on a sidewalk with sticky muddy soil, the blade gummed up with mud and the edger ate batteries. In less than 100 feet, I used 2 - 3 AH and an 1.5 AH battery. If soil is super wet bring extra batteries or let soil dry out before edging. This was one of the few times I ran out battery power before running out of human power.
In July 2024, I made a YouTube video showing the Black and Decker 20v edger working on the sidewalk at Emmanuel Lutheran. https://youtu.be/yz9zpV1XzPk.
