Sometimes, I miss the days of a simple valve seat rubber washer.
Bathroom and kitchen faucets use a mixing cartridge that also acts as shut off valve. If the faucet begins to leak the cartridge needs to have new O-rings and requires the cartridge be removed for their access. Sometimes if you are lucky the cartridge is easy to pull out after the retainer clips have been removed. Most of the time you need to twist the cartridge using a plastic twisting plug that is provided with cartridge. After 30 years of using their twisting plug, I purchased a Lasco metal cartridge removal tool from my local True Value hardware store for $35 in January 2026. I realize there are cheaper tools available but supporting local business is important.
Moen cartridge removal tool is designed to remove both plastic & brass cartridges. The tool both twists and pulls the cartridge where the twisting plug only twists.
Steps for removal
Turn off water and turn on facet
Remove handle and metal collar stop tube
Remove the retainer clip using needle nose plyers
Loosen black cap about 1/2"
Align tool tabs in cartridge and screw the black cap into handle screw and twist cartridge
With a slight pulling motion pull the cartridge out of faucet
When only the stem come out then:
Slide the brass ring over the black button on the handle so it is locked down.
Insert handle to line on the handle and twist until you hear the black button engage in the hole in casing
Pull the plastic casing out.
Reassemble faucet and test to see if hot is coming out of hot side. If hot is coming out cold side then turn the cartridge 180 degrees

It works but check valve to make sure hot waster is coming out hot side. If not turn cartridge 180 degrees so intake holes are aligned with hot.
