この度は、東京大学大学院生の田中祥子さん、天川知美さん、深田芳史さん、紺野正典さんの4人に、応用言語学に関する研究発表をして頂きます。

【タイトル】Japanese EFL learners’ ideal English user models: A case of a university female student without any experiences abroad

【要旨】A number of researchers and educators have emphasized
the importance of the notion of English as an international language
for Japanese learners of English. They claim particularly that it is
essential for the Japanese learners to be liberated from the
Anglo-Saxon native speaker (NS) models. Nonetheless, little has
been empirically studied regarding the learners’ actual English
user models. This case study therefore explores the perceived ideal
English user models among Japanese university students. Four
participants were interviewed individually three times. In this presentation,
one of the female participants, who had not been abroad, is focused.
The data showed the participant’s appreciation of her Japanese peers
with high English proficiency, rather than monolingual English NSs.
However, the data also indicated her desire for NS’s English
proficiency. These findings imply that the participant’s ideal model may
ultimately be a perfect bilingual proficient in both Japanese and English
at the same native level.

Lingua Franca over Computer-Mediated Chat in Japan

【要旨】In large part, conversational coherence in face-to-face
communication can be attributed to pragmatic competence. Communication
over computer-mediated chat, however, requires different strategies
for maintaining coherence. Especially among speakers of English as a
lingua franca, who use a language other than their native tongue to
communicate, the limitations of this medium could pose great
difficulties. In order to understand whether this coherence is
maintained over computer-mediated chat, this study analyzes
conversations in English as a lingua franca over text-based instant
messaging between Japanese students and international students
studying at Japanese universities. Findings suggest that interlocutors
are able to maintain coherence and hold successful conversations,
regardless of limitations in the medium.

their affinity space(親和空間における、留学生の主体的な目標言語を介した社会的交流)

【要旨】The number of international students studying in English-speaking
countries keeps increasing. This is partly attributed to their
expectation of improving their English skills by immersing themselves
in an English environment. Their expectation is reasonable since
“participation precedes learning” (Bateson, 1994, p. 41). However, the
question is how much opportunity they actually have to participate in
English social interactions in the host country. Many studies
including Ayano (2006) show that the opportunities for TL-mediated
socialization are not automatically given even living in the host
country. Taking a postmodern and a social constructivist approaches,
the presenter conduced a critical ethnography focusing on two
international students’ (Korean and Japanese) TL-mediated
socialization with local people in naturalistic contexts of the host
country (Honolulu, Hawaii). Collecting the related data longitudinally
by informal long interviews and participatory observation, he found
that international students were securing opportunities for
TL-mediated socialization by seeking out their own affinity space.

によると「英文復元法とも呼ばれるディクトグロスでは、『文法能力向上』と、学習者の作成した文を正確なものに訂正することで、『言葉を分析し選択すること』もできる」としています。この活動を通して、初級学習者である中学生が「内容的にまとまりのある英文を作成する力」をどれぐらい身につけることができるか、4技能の統合作業の一環として、メモを取る中で「キーワード」を見つけて、英文を復元する過程で、学習者の復元する言語にどんな変化が起こるかを研究しました。偏差値で生徒を3つのグループに分け、プレテストとポストテストで比較し、結果にどのような違いが生まれるかを研究しました。生徒はステップを踏むことでディクトグロスを十分行えるようになり、十分この活動を行うことが出来たと実感しています。ですが、グループAが一番伸びを示したことからもわかるように、「内容にまとまりのある文章を書く」ためには、『書くこと』の下位項目である基礎・基本的な知識が十分に備わっていることが大事であること、さらにはこれらの知識がある程度ないと、「内容に一貫性のある英文を書くこと」も難しいということ、がこの研究からわかりました。
