Abstract:

As critical perspectives in applied linguistics have gained legitimacy and even mainstream status, it is necessary for us to reexamine the meaning of praxis, which constitutes the foundation of critical engagement. Focusing on three keywords for praxis in Freirean critical pedagogy―reflection, action, and transformation, this presentation will examine how criticality can be conceptualized from postmodernist, Marxist-influenced, and race-based postcolonial perspectives. While all perspectives underscore synergy of the three keywords, Freirean critical pedagogy and race-based postcolonial perspectives raise questions regarding who does emancipatory action for whom and how. These questions invite us to recognize the importance of hyper-self-reflexivity (Kapoor, 2004) and result-oriented strategic action (Kumaravadivelu, 2016).

Ryuko Kubota, Ph.D. is Professor of the Department of Language and Literacy Education, Faculty of Education, University of British Columbia. She specializes in critical applied linguistics.
