「A mixed-method study of English users in Japan: A progress report」

要旨
This presentation reports on an ongoing mixed-method study about English users in Japan. The study aims to investigate the realities of the use and users of English in Japan in order to acquire essential knowledge for English education policymaking. The presentation also touches on some theoretical and practical issues regarding mixed method studies in applied linguistics.
The present mixed-method study started with a secondary analysis of a large social study database, JGSS 2002-2010, to grasp the social characteristics of English users in Japan. Based on the profiles provided by the statistical analysis, six participants for the narrative part of the study were selected. The three male and three female English users were interviewed two to three times each about their language learning and education as well as general life histories.
The data are currently being analyzed based on Bourdieu's concept of capital. This notion of capital highlights the learners' own assessment of the investability of second language learning (e.g., Peirce, 1995). In the discourse of globalization, English is identified as the international language of economic opportunities, and education policies, particularly in expanding-circle nations, reinforce that discourse. However, the statistical and narrative data in the present study so far indicate that, in Japan, English proficiency becomes capital only for a small minority and under conditions which involve complex accumulation and trading of other forms of capital, including areas of residence and educational background. The data indicate that the neoliberal discourse of English as capital seems to be disconnected from the lived realities of the Japanese.

要旨
This study investigates how harmony-oriented mind-set of Japanese, or WA (和, harmony), develops miscommunication among Japanese English speakers, particularly when a consensus is achieved and when disagreement is euphemistically expressed. This study focuses its analytical attention on the context where English is used as a lingua franca in business discourse. The author employs an ethnographic approach to discourse analysis based on the data retrieved through stimulated conversation. Drawing on the result of data analysis, this study consequently suggests some pedagogical implications of how Japanese business communication issue in relation to face-threatening act (FTA) should be addressed in future corporate in-house training program conducted in global companies.
