She was the eldest of four children and with 13 years between her and the next eldest, she spent many of her teen years helping care for her three siblings.
Pat moved with her parents in 1951, to Southern California where she later graduated from high school and, somewhat serendipitously, met the love of her life, Jerry Molen. Shortly after their marriage in 1954, Jerry was shipped off for a 10-month tour in the Marine Corps. While overseas, Jerry demonstrated his absolute devotion with daily letters to his young bride. Their life was a perfect picture of unconditional love, sacrifice and commitment. They were married for almost 70 wonderful years.

She was also entrepreneurial and responsible for starting and operating three businesses in the local Flathead area. She enjoyed sewing, roller skating, bowling, tennis, swimming, ping pong, golf, tending her garden, and traveling.
She was active in many nonprofit organizations and was very active with church assignments. She loved helping others and will be remembered for her sweet spirit, warm smile, and her caring heart.
Her husband's career in the entertainment business allowed her to travel all over the world and she thoroughly loved learning about other cultures and seeing iconic sights. She loved the excitement that came from sharing in the role she and Jerry played in the business of "Hollywood" and the many films they were involved with.
Above all, Pat's priority and passion was her family. She was a cherished and devoted wife, a loving mother, a doting grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a strong, independent woman and she exuded a grace and kindness that made a permanent impression on all those who knew and loved her.

✞Jeffery Scott Mallaber, aka “Jeffie Baby”, left this world on November 2, 2021. His battle with glioblastoma has finally ended, and he is free of pain and confusion as he happily takes his place in the beautiful realm of Heaven. Jeff was born on November 10th, 1958, in Washington, D.C., to Clayton Ward Mallaber and Marilyn Behe Mallaber. Jeff leaves behind his wife of 40 years, Allison Mallaber, of Waterford, Vermont. They met long ago at their place of work, Wonder Bread & Hostess Cake of Ocala, Florida. Jeff was smitten right from the first introduction to Allison, and Allison was head-over-heels for Jeffie. Jeff also leaves behind his three daughters, Elizabeth Bonasera (and husband Nate), Olivia Drechsel, son-in-law Christian Drechsel, all of Littleton, Colorado, and Alicia Mallaber of St. Johnsbury, Vermont. Nine grandchildren are now left without a Papa. From oldest to youngest, they are Jacob (JJ), Zoe, Samantha, Lana, Jadalynn, Julius, Jace, Isabelle, and Josephine (Josie). Jeff loved being a Papa, buying gifts, giving horsie-rides, reading books, and appropriately spoiling the grandchildren as only a Papa can do. He even introduced them to his invented gyrating, 2-fingered personality, “Captain Voot”!
Many relatives are mourning the loss of Jeff. His sister Julie Judy and her husband Ernie, Danielle and Chris Waymire, Krystal and Rod Cumbus, George and Diana Oram, James Oram, Dori and Bill Nanry, all of Florida, and Bev Doherty of Bedford, NH, many, many cousins, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews. Jeff was preceded in death by his son-in-law Jacob Mercer of California, his mother and father, Marilyn and Clayton Mallaber, and mother-in-law Elaine Oram Cornett, of Florida, and brother-in-law Dan Doherty of New Hampshire.
Although Jeff graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Criminal Justice, his real passion was for medicine. He attended the University of Colorado Health Sciences College, and earned a degree as a Physician Assistant. Jeff's love of medicine and helping people was where he shined. He spent almost 13 years working for Urology Associates in Denver, Colorado, and almost two years with The Rocky Mountain Men's Health Clinic before being diagnosed with glioblastoma.
Hiking in the Rocky Mountains with his family was an activity Jeff enjoyed. He spent time with his many dogs over the years, and even some cats. Jeff learned to love his wife's goats, sheep, chickens, and especially horses. His golf score never improved to competition level, but he did have a mean swing, and often played in the Denver area. He loved working out at the gym, swimming in oceans, lakes, and pools, and was known as “Runs With A Beer” after a close encounter with a shooter in a downtown Denver bar. Whether fishing in the ocean or a lake, Jeffie Baby could brag about his catches of enormous, toothy, man-eating fish with the best-of-them.
Jeff's generosity was a beautiful thing! He donated money to many charitable causes, and also took a personal interest in helping people in dire financial straits to pay their rent, buy groceries, and obtain much needed vehicles. Jeff's generosity was legendary. Jeff Mallaber is already greatly missed. If you have any stories about Jeff you'd like to share, please send them to Jeff Mallaber c/o 131 Lee Farm Road, St. Johnsbury, Vermont 05819. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to GoFundMe, “Jeff Mallaber's battle with brain cancer” or to “Spay Today” in Lakewood, Colorado. Memories and condolences may be shared with family at saylesfh.com.

William Kleinhans' first wife Mary Huth's family was uncovered in the 1892 NYS Census and the 1900 and 1910 US Census. Mary was born in Germany and immigrated in 1886 with her parents and siblings. They lived on Moyer Rd in Royalton, NY. Due to this discovery, over 350 Kleinhans/Huth cousins have been added to the William Kleinhans branch including about 220 current grandchildren and great-grandchildren. (see Huth Family)

Obituaries were moved to the branch and obituary pages to improve the process of adding and accessing obits. Also, homestead/home photos and locations (if available) were added to the main branch pages for Frederick and August making them more accessible. Other tweaks and improvements have also been implemented throughout the site. We're committed to making this site (and other families' sites) as easy and clear to use as possible within the limitations imposed by Google Sites. Also, it would be easier and more satisfying with some feedback from people using this site. Just a few words would be fine, there's no need for a long conversation.

With any human endeavor errors happen and this website is no different. Mistakes are made from misunderstandings or lack of information. When found or more information becomes available errors are regularly corrected often without notice. Every time this website is reviewed there are things that could be changed or improved, but time is limited. Regrettably, updated information about parents and offspring isn't often available until someone dies and leaves an obituary.
Regardless, it's striking that obituaries (although some barely pass as death notices) were found for Frederick, August, and their wives with information about their lives and farms from 170 years ago. Plus obituaries for Frederick's 6 surviving children and spouses, and most of August's 7 children. And obituaries for 23 of Frederick's 25 grandchildren and 9 of August's 11 grandchildren . Much of the early Kleinhans family tree would be incomplete or hopelessly inaccurate except for the obituaries and articles found mainly in the Union-Sun & Journal newspaper accessed through www.fultonhistory.com and the Lockport Library.

About 50 missing obituaries have been located and added from local old newspapers published after 1972 raising the total obits to about 350. There are potentially more but some are older or not in local newspapers making them difficult to find. But unexpected things pop up on the internet so there's always hope. Several of the missing older obituaries were from Kleinhans who lived in Akron, NY. They were not in the Lockport Union-Sun & Journal or the Batavia Daily News.

After extensively searching through old issues of the Niagara Sun newspaper 1896 through 1911 totaling some 3,200 hits, several items came to light:
▪️ Frederick Kleinhans' widow Ernestine was treated for dropsy (edema) at least a year before she died in 1899.
▪️ No obituary has been found for August (Sr) Kleinhans in a local newspaper.
▪️ William Kleinhans' first wife Marie (Huth) was treated by a doctor at least twice before she died in 1905 but there's no mention of her ailment.
▪️ Frederick's sons William and Fred (Jr) provided crop threshing services to nearby farmers, and carpentry work particularly Fred (Jr). By certain accounts, William had a threshing team. Both were likely well-known by farmers in the Royalton area, and they traveled to Niagara Falls and Buffalo for business at least a few times which wasn't an everyday event then.
▪️ In 1908 August (Sr)'s two young granddaughters Dora and Sylvia, Herman Kleinhans' children, had a mishap with a horse and buggy they borrowed. The horse broke free, dumped the buggy and passengers, fell, and broke its neck on Bunker Hill Rd. near Dysingers' Corner about 2 miles from Wolcottsville. The girls were not injured.
▪️ There were plenty of short newspaper pieces about Frederick and August's children and grandchildren but almost nothing about themselves.
▪️ And finally in 1910, August's (Sr) son Herman Kleinhans and his widow Marie (Scharlow) Kleinhans visited Frederick's son William Kleinhans' family on Akron Rd. So this was presumably Aunt Marie and first cousin Herman visiting nephew and first cousin William. This is the only newspaper piece identified connecting the two founding Kleinhans family branches showing they were directly familiar and friendly with each other even though it happened after the presumed brothers Frederick and August (Sr) had both died. An 1856 immigration passenger list on FamilySearch shows 32 y.o. Friedr [sic] Petitjean, 34 y.o. Wilhemina [sic] Petitjean, 6 y.o. Wilhelmina Petitjean, and 11 m.o. Augustina Petitjean arrived at the Port of New York on Nov. 18 from Hamburg, Prussia on the ship James N Cooper. (see German/Prussian/French Roots) Somehow Ernestine was incorrectly listed as Wilhemina. Thanks to Leigh Coyle of Australia on FamilySearch for recently identifying and attaching the passenger list to Frederick Petitjean's page.
Another 1856 immigration passenger list on FamilySearch shows 22 y.o. August Petitjean arrived at the Port of New York on June 9, 1856, from Hamburg, Prussia on the ship Gerhardt. This means August immigrated solo to America about 5 months before his brother Frederick did. (see German/Prussian/French Roots)

As noted on the German/Prussian/French Roots page, according to FamilySearch.org the Kleinhans' family name was previously Petitjean implying a French ancestry. As such, Jean Petitjean, a recent addition to the Kleinhans / Petitjean family tree, was Frederick Kleinhans' great-great-great-great-grandfather. He was born about 1628 in Macau near Bordeaux, France a Roman capital city nearly 2,000 years ago. After leaving France with his family sometime around 1655, Jean Petitjean died in 1718 in Gramzow, Brandenburg, Prussia just 8 miles south of Trampe, Brandenburg where Frederick lived about a hundred years later before emigrating to America.
Additionally, as mentioned in March below, the Norman Kleinhans branch is related to the Gormley family. According to the FamilySearch website, the Gormleys are related to Emily Elizabeth Dickinson through the Kellogg family.
And if the French ancestry surprise, Joyce Carol Oates and Emily Elizabeth Dickinson aren't enough, the Norman Kleinhans branch (through the Gormley and Kellogg families) is also related to twenty-six (26) US Presidents from George Washington to Richard Nixon, Marie Antoinette, Winston Churchill, Princess Diana of Wales, the Orville brothers, John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, and Elvis Presley to name just a few (62 total according to FamilySearch). Here's a link to the Norman Kleinhans family tree on FamilySearch.com but you have to sign in to view it and you won't be able to see the famous relatives unless you search through their large tree. Instead, you can view a duplicate of the Famous Relatives page here which has pictures and links to the famous people the Gormleys are related to according to FamilySearch.

An article was recently published in the Lockport Union-Sun & Journal regarding the history of Wolcottsville. The author suggests that a number of the original Germans / Prussians moved out of Wolcottsville in 1857, apparently moving back to Martinsville, Bergholtz, or Walmore. This may have provided the Kleinhans family the opportunity to settle in Wolcottsville. Regardless of this departure, many people living today in Wolcottsville and the surrounding area are likely descendants of the original German immigrants and other Germans who moved there afterward. Some of Frederick and August Kleinhans' descendants live in Wolcottsville, Royalton, Medina, Akron, and Lockport.

The Kleinhans family may be connected to another famous author besides Joyce Carol Oates. According to the FamilySearch website the Gormley family is related to poet Emily Elizabeth Dickinson (1830-1886) through the Kellogg family from British Colonial America in the 1600s. The Norman Kleinhans branch is related to the Gormley family through Norman's wife Kathleen (Gormley). The Gormley/Kellogg tree is readily available on FamilySearch with a free account with sources available as proof. While this seems credible, unless and until a professional genealogist investigates and vets the information in question this should be taken with a grain of salt.
As any genealogist will tell you, if you go back far enough you'll likely find notable people in your family tree. That's because of the increased odds from the sheer numbers of ancestors since you have 2 parents, 4 grandparents, 8 great-grandparents, 16 great-great-grandparents, 32 great-great-great-grandparents, and so on. So the further you go back the more relatives you may find who are notable. The Kellogg's family tree has been well-researched and goes back several centuries.

Aside from the site refresh and recent obituary for George Jago (see above), other new information has been added. On the German/Prussian/French Roots and Emigration page, a recently discovered article about German immigrants clearly explains why and how the Kleinhans family presumably left their homeland for the freedom of America, specifically the Western NY area, and how the immigrants ended up in different areas of Erie and Niagara County.

Site refresh - All the embedded Google maps and street views have been replaced with static pictures instead. But they've been linked to the same matching Google maps and street views so you can still access them on a separate page. Unfortunately, the embedded maps/street views didn't work that well on anything other than desktop or laptop computers. On the other hand, embedded YouTube videos work well on most devices.
Besides changing embedded maps/street views, nearly every page has been reworked and reformatted to look better on tablets and phones. Pictures and text were enlarged, and the family tree pages were expanded to be less cluttered and easier to read although you might want to turn your phone sideways to enhance viewing. Phones and small tablets in portrait mode will squeeze the family tree pages specifically eliminating the indentation that indicates parent/child relations. Switching to landscape mode restores the formatting. Many pictures and newspaper articles will mostly fill the screen of your tablet or phone. If they look too large on your desktop or laptop screen resize your browser's window to the size you want.

While working on the George Disinger branch of the Disinger family, another connection to the Kleinhans family was uncovered. The two families had some neighboring farms, attended the same churches, and their children went to the same schools. In the early years, they were all rural farmers in Royalton, and years later many moved to Lockport to work in a factory. They shared the same history, culture, geopolitical location, and economics during the same era. It might have been more surprising if they hadn't known each other.

The 1950 US Census data has been processed for Frederick's children and grandchildren. Some facts about a few great-grandchildren were added as they related to their parents.
Apr 28, 2022
Details are being added from the 1950 US Census just released this month. It may take several days or weeks to search and process the new data for Frederick's children and grandchildren who have all died. Census data for great(-great)-grandchildren will not be added, particularly because some are still living.
Dec 12, 2021
Using FamilySearch, the lives of Frederick's six (6) children and twenty-four (24) grandchildren were examined by finding the census data for their lifespans from 1860 through 1940, the most current US Census data available. By looking at the census data, it was possible to get a clearer picture of their lives and uncover certain details. With these facts, a summary for each descendant was written to illuminate hopefully their lives. The detailed census data is in the Homestead & Census Data pages organized by years and census locations, mainly towns.

A couple of discoveries: The Frederick Kleinhans and Jago/Gajow families lived across the street from each other in 1860, and the location of Jacob and Augusta (Kleinhans) Miller's property was determined (see both in 1860-1880 Homesteads & Census). Also, some past obituaries are slowly becoming available because some newspapers have added older previously published obits to their websites. A few cemeteries are gradually adding obits and materials they've collected from past burials to the Find A Grave website. And next year the US government will release the 1950 Census Bureau data which will eventually be searchable. Hopefully, this will help to find some unknown/missing family members.

When Joyce Carol Oates' grandmother married Leo Homer Woodside in 1937, Joyce became Frederick and Ernestine Kleinhans' step-great-great-granddaughter, and a step-cousin to everyone in the Kleinhans family tree. You can read the Joyce Carol Oates Family page for more.

Links were added on the Home page (update: moved here instead) about articles written by Joyce Carol Oates, a nationally renowned writer, and Pulitzer Prize finalist several times. Born in Lockport and arguably its most famous native, JCO recounts some of her memories about Lockport, her youth, and her family. She grew up on a small Millersport farm near Tonawanda Creek in Amherst, Erie County. Besides taking a bus to school in Lockport her grandmother lived in the city, her father worked at Harrison Radiator, and her grand-aunt (grandmother's sister) was married to national and local bowling legend Allie Brandt.

Occupations and Retirement: Some turn of the twentieth-century farmers sold their farms and retired although many didn't. Also, Niagara County residents have been traveling to Florida for retirement long before modern highways and jet airlines.

Since the newly updated enlarged Kleinhans family tree has become difficult to follow, the tree has been separated into smaller easier-to-read branch pages. Quick-access, branch surname lists were added to the home page. Based on a list of only surnames in a branch, a visitor can quickly identify a specific branch by looking for a surname and other close relatives' surnames, then click on the branch's link to view it on a separate page. Also, page searches and whole-site searching are still available to help visitors find a surname.

There are now roughly 650 descendants identified with nearly 200 obituaries. A growing total of grandchildren and great-grandchildren are not mentioned by name in some obituaries. Several missing family members were found with the help of newly discovered obituaries and extensive internet searching, especially for families who moved away from Niagara County, New York.
Nov 28, 2020
More people have been added with the help of newly-found obituaries, some of which mention several unnamed grandchildren. Eventually, once everyone is finally added if it ever happens, there will likely be over 1,000 people in the Kleinhans Family tree. This is truly a tribute to the life and legacy of the brothers Frederick and August, and all their descendants living and deceased.

Each obituary found on the internet turns up more family members; spouses, fathers, mothers, siblings, and grandchildren. At first, many obituaries were found and the family tree expanded rapidly, but the pace has slowed. About 60 or more obituaries between 1972 and about 2012, 50 years, published in the Lockport Union-Sun & Journal or the Buffalo News have not been transcribed and posted on the internet.
Oct 25, 2020
The Kleinhans family tree keeps growing; several dozen more cousins with more grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and more obituaries were added.

For anyone who might be interested, we've done a family tree for the Kleinhans Niagara County family at: https://sites.google.com/.../kleinhans-family.../home
Surnames - Jago, Harper, Garlock, Weinheimer, Dena, Quartararo, Degan, Magolis, Cousins, DeFilippo, Trumbull, Richardson, Penn, Stanley, Boyne, Hunt, Adams, Richards, Mahan, Whitney, Menard, D'Arcy, Mittlestadt, Gilbert, Lindke, Winslow, Goodnick, Bowes, Miller, Van Buren, Hoste, Cummings, Cook, Newton, Pepple, Evans, Southard, Small, Wicks, Koepsel, Schultz, Wolter, Weber, Pafk, Thompson, Schalge, Pantel, Howard, Fisler, Kidder, Hahn
120 Obituaries with 80 more to come if we ever get in the Library
Please enjoy.
Because we know the tree is incomplete and has mistakes, we're willing to update it. But please don't expect us to make many changes quickly, suggest web page layout modifications, or send a constant stream of additions and corrections. Please include scanned copies of newspaper obits, births, or weddings. Also, it's not wise to post month/day birthdays or addresses for living people, or current pictures for anyone. Google doesn't restrict the storage size of the websites, but it does restrict the number of files/pages, so please don't send any pictures unless it's for an obit. If the site becomes a problem it will be disabled or removed.
Comment
Because of the sheer numbers, mistakes surely have been made here and perhaps many people are missing in the branches. Without access to current newspapers or census records, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren will remain missing unless family members willingly contribute to this website to help extend the family tree and correct mistakes. Regardless, the number of Kleinhans descendants is more or less remarkable after about 170 years, and 7 to 8 generations started by just one or two couples.
Of course, without the Find A Grave, Fulton History, and Family Search websites, much of the Kleinhans family tree would have taken years to compile instead of months. There are more websites as well that were useful (see the Help page), but the three main search sites provided the most info. Fulton History furnishes searchable access to old Lockport Union-Sun & Journal newspapers that published most of the pre-1972 Kleinhans obituaries and wedding announcements. Recent obituaries came from many sources including current newspapers and funeral home websites.
