In 1894 Frederick Kleinhans' son Frederick (Jr) Kleinhans married Isadora Woodside. In 1937 Joyce Carol Oates' grandmother Blanche (Morningstar / Morgenstern) Oates married Leo Homer Woodside the nephew of Frederick (Jr) and Isadora (Woodside) Kleinhans. As a result, Blanche's second husband Leo became Joyce's step-grandfather, Frederick (Jr) and Isadora became the step-uncle and step-aunt of Blanche, and Joyce became their step-grandniece and a step-cousin to the rest of the Kleinhans family. (see Woodside family below)
Joyce Carol Oates a nationally renowned writer and Pulitzer Prize finalist was born in Lockport and is arguably its most famous native. JCO recounts some of her memories about Lockport, her youth, and her family on the websites below, clearly revealing she understands Lockport as only a native can. She grew up on a small Millersport farm near Tonawanda Creek in Amherst, Erie County on the border of Niagara County and the Town of Lockport. Besides taking a bus to school in Lockport her grandmother lived in the city, and her father worked at Harrison Radiator. Also, her grandmother's sister lived in Lockport and was married to national and local bowling legend Allie Brandt.

***BUFFALO COURIER, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 1917 LITTLE BOY TELLS WHAT HAPPENED TO FATHER - Trial of Stephen Karodi on charge of manslaughter for the alleged killing of Stephen Bush, Williamsville farmer, which was continued in county court yesterday probably will be finished today. Karodi is charged with having hit Bush on the head with a shovel because the latter tore Karodi's trousers in a friendly scuffle in a Black Rock Saloon. Frank Bush a curly headed lad of eleven years and an eye witness to the affair testified: "I was watching the team while father went into a saloon. When he did not come out, I went to call him. I saw him stagger out of the saloon and I saw that man (indicating the defendant) following him. That man went up to my father and knocked my father down. My father did not get up the next day, and then he died."
***BUFFALO COURIER, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1917 KARODI GUILTY OF MANSLAUGHTER - Stephen Karodi was found guilty of manslaughter, first degree, by a jury before Judge Laing yesterday afternoon for causing the death of Stephen Bush, a Williamsville farmer, last September. He will be sentenced tomorrow. Karodi hit Bush on the head with a shovel as the result of a scuffle in a Grote street saloon. After the attack Bush managed to stagger to his wagon and was driven home by his eleven-year-old son. When he arrived home he was unconscious and remained in that condition until his death the next day. Irving Weiss, who represented the defendant, made a motion for a new trial, but was denied. Assistant District Attorney Walter Hofheins appeared for the people .
***BUFFALO COURIER, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1917 SHOWS LENIENCY IN SENTENCE OF KARODI - County Judge Laing yesterday sentenced Stephen Karodi, convicted of manslaughter, first degree, for killing Stephen Bush in a Grote street saloon, to serve one day in the penitentiary. Leniency was extended because friends raised a fund of $1,200 to help support Bush's family, and Karodi agreed to add to it.
note- The $1,200 they raised would be close to $30,000 today. But it was worth more than that. The sum was enough to pay for a house, a car, food, and keep for the mother and children until the kids were at least adults.
Partial northern section of the 1938 Town of Amherst map from Historic Map Works.
On the left of the map are two lots highlighted in red boxes labeled Frank Bush about 1/3 mile from Sweet Home Rd. Another lot highlighted on the right in red is labeled Burt J. Bush (possibly related). Frank Bush was Stephen Bush's son and Joyce Carol Oates' granduncle who would have been thirty-two (32) years old in 1938. The John Bush/Oates' home in Millersport on Transit Rd. was about seven (7) miles from Frank Bush's farm on Tonawanda Creek Rd.
Joyce's Millersport family farm/home was on the 1938 submap of Millersport in the town of Amherst. The name on the property was John Bush. Her mother's unofficial adoptive parents were John and Lena Bush. The one-room schoolhouse (see below) Joyce attended in Niagara County near Millersport was on the 1938 Town of Lockport map. On the south side of Tonawanda Creek Rd. (north of Tonawanda Creek) about 1,000 feet from Transit Rd it was labeled "School No. 7" and is no longer there. Joyce walked about a mile to the school every day. Since her farm was on the south side of Tonawanda Creek and the school was on the north side, young Joyce had to cross the creek at the bridge on Transit Rd twice daily when she walked to and from school (see the following).
Buffalo Stories - Torn-Down Tuesday: When Transit was a beautiful little country road By Steve Cichon "In 1952, mothers protested on the bridge that crossed Transit Road at Tonawanda Creek, just north of Millersport Highway. Some Erie County children had to cross the bridge — which had no sidewalks — on foot to get to their Niagara County school each day. The bridge that goes over the same spot today has two wide shoulders and carries five lanes of traffic."
Joyce 13/14 and her mother may have been in this photo since their farm was just feet away from the bridge although Joyce was in junior high then. The picture below is magnified. On the right side just past the bridge, you can see a sign that could be a "Welcome to Lockport" sign and a side road turning to the right. So the photo faces north and the former Bush/ Oates farm is on the left before the bridge. The side road on the right going east is where Joyce and her mother's one-room schoolhouse was located (see below). Coincidently Transit Rd. was always more than just "a little country road" since it was established in 1799.
Was this 13/14-year-old Joyce with her mother in the front on the right looking back at her?
A similar old bridge is still used 8 miles east of Transit Rd crossing Tonawanda Creek. One of Frederick Kleinhans' granddaughters lived near this bridge. (see 1910-1920 Homesteads & Census) A plaque on the bridge says 1937.
Facebook: The Millersport School was located on the south side of Tonawanda Creek Road near Transit. Legend has it that after the school closed, it was moved to Fisk Road and became a farm outbuilding. (If you can confirm or deny this, I’d love to hear from you.) A well-known author attended this school; can you guess who? Photograph is courtesy of David McDonald.
note- Today there are several old farms on Fisk Rd. in Pendleton where the old schoolhouse might be but there isn't one that looks obviously like it.

✞LOCKPORT, N.Y., UNION-SUN AND JOURNAL THURSDAY EVENING, JANUARY 15, 1931 MAN BEATS WIFE, THEN KILLS SELF - John H. Morningstar Found With Top Of Head Blown Off—Mate Is In Hospital Following Assault.
After beating his wife about the head, face and body with a claw hammer in their home at 22 Corinthia street last night, John H. Morningstar, 63, went into the cellar and shot himself with a twelve-gauge shotgun, a few seconds before Michael C Niland, New York Central railroad detective, walked into the cellar to investigate the assault. Morningstar died instantly. Mrs. Hattie Perkins Morningstar, 50, the wife, is in the City hospital. Her condition is not considered serious by her physician. Dr. W. D. Wisner. Although he has not made an x-ray examination, he said there is no indication of a fractured skull.
Top of Head Blown Off. - Police headquarters received a call to the Morningstar home shortly after 9 o'clock last night and Patrolman Niland, on desk duty, sent Detective Sergeant Beccue and Patrolmen Croose and Donovan to the residence. The officers found Mrs. Morningstar in a dazed condition from the hammer claws and Morningstar's body in the cellar with the top of his head blown off. Blood stains were found about the kitchen and on the door leading to the cellar. The Kennedy ambulance was dispatched to the Morningstar home and Mrs. Morningstar walked to the ambulance, police said. She was taken to the hospital. Morningstar's body was moved to the Taylor and Reynolds undertaking parlors. Detective Niland told the police that Mrs. Blanche Oates, who was visiting her parents, ran to his home, 18 Corinthia street, and informed him that her parents were having an argument and that they were struggling. Niland went to the Morningstar home, accompanied by the daughter, and found Mrs. Morningstar lying across a table in the kitchen. The woman was bleeding profusely from the wounds inflicted by her husband.
Warning From Wife. - The railroad detective declared that he had heard the Morningstar's arguing, but paid no attention until the daughter came after him. "He's down in the cellar and he's going to shoot us all," Mrs. Morningstar warned. "He has a gun." Lieutenant Niland, holding an ironing board before him as a shield, descended the cellar stairs. Before he reached the bottom steps, however, Morningstar, cowering in a comer, had placed the shotgun against his head and blown off the top of it. The man apparently had held the gun at his side at arm's length, placed the end of the barrel behind his left ear and pulled the trigger. There was a hole through his head on the left side. The police have not yet assigned any reason for Morningstar's act. They learned that the dead man had not worked for some time: neither was there any evidence that he had been drinking. Police have not talked with Mrs. Morningstar, and could advance no reason for the assault on her.
Morningstar last worked as a laborer at Glenwood cemetery. He came here about thirty years ago and worked as a farmer for S. Wright McCollum, former postmaster. He managed the latter's farm for several years before moving to Corinthia street. Besides his wife and Mrs. Oates, Morningstar is survived by three other daughters and four sons, Mrs. Albert Brandt of Lockport, Mrs. Ada Brandt of Newfane, Mrs. James W. Britton of Anniston, Ala., John, Walter, Carl and Laverne Morningstar of Lockport. A sister, Mrs. R. B. Vail lives in Buffalo. One daughter, Maud Agnes Morningstar Britton, yesterday announced her marriage to Dr. James Woodruff Britton of New York The announcement said they would live at Anniston. Ala.
The funeral services will be private at the family home on Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock. Burial will be in Hartland Central cemetery.

*** THE MEDINA DAILY JOURNAL 1914 - While making changes in the gas connections in a trench in front of the First Presbyterian church yesterday, Mr. Fred Woodside, employed by Chase A Breed, was overcome with gas and when found was unconscious. He was removed from the trench and revived by Dr. Scott. While making the repairs the flow of gas had not been entirely shut off, and Mr. Woodside was overcome before he realized it. In a short time he was able to resume his work, apparently none the worse for "going to sleep on the job.''
note- Freddie took after his steamfitter older brother Robert.
