In 1910, 16-year-old Rose worked as a (domestic) servant for John Silsby's family. Also employed by John Silsby was farmhand John Goodnick. Rose and John were married that same year. (see 1910-1920 Homesteads & Census) In the 1930 US Census Rose and John were renting a home on Ridge Rd in Hartland, Niagara County where John and his son Elmer were farming. John's obituary states he retired from farming in 1951 after about 40 years. Rose and John had 3 children, 2 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
John was the brother of William Goodnick who was married to Rose's sister Martha (Jago) Brown's husband Herman Brown's sister Bertha (Brown) Goodnick. In other words, a male Goodnick married a female Jago whose sister married a male Brown whose sister married another male Goodnick.
Rose (Jago) and John Goodnick, son Elmer and Helen (Snell) Goodnick, daughter Mildred (Goodnick) and Robert Hill, and son John Goodnick, all lived within 1/2 to 3/4 miles of each other in Middleport near the Erie Canal. Rose and John lived on Sleeper Street (see below). Elmer and Helen lived on Sherman Rd. Mildred and Robert lived south of the canal on Watson Ave. In 1950, John (Jr) was single, living with his parents, and working in a factory. (see obit below)

In 1930 John and Rose Goodnick rented a farm in Hartland, NY and their oldest son Elmer helped John with farming. By 1950 John had retired from farming and moved to the house above. John and Rose with their adult children Elmer, Mildred, and John (Jr) all lived in Middleport within a mile of each other near the Erie Canal.
