Contrary to a previous assumption, Mary/Marie Huth, William Kleinhans' first wife, was not an orphan who emigrated alone as a child. Instead, she emigrated from Germany with her parents and siblings in 1886. She lived with her family in Royalton, NY, until she married William Kleinhans in 1892. (see mini-bio below) The 1900 US Census states that Mary, born in June 1871 in Germany, was married for 8 years and immigrated at age 14. Sadly, she died in 1905 at age 33 after bearing four children. The family tree for the Huth family follows below, starting with Mary's parents, August and Johanna Huth, with over 350 descendants, including about 220 recent grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The 1892 NYS Census for Royalton had a family named Hoot with father Guss (August) 41, mother Johanna 43, grandmother Caroline 71, children Anna 22, Mary 20 (who presumably married William Kleinhans the same year), Louise 17, Tennia (Ernestine) 14, Fred 12, Alice 5, and Albert 3 all listed as born in Germany,
The 1900 US Census for Royalton had the same family named Hoot with a father August 49, a mother Johanna 52, children Alice 14, and Albert 11. The grandmother had likely died, and the older children had married and left home. The 2 children left were listed as US-born, which was likely correct. On the 1908 Royalton map, there was a property labeled A. Hoot on the road now called Moyer Rd with neighbors named Rensing and Haack that matched their neighbors' names in the 1900 US Census. There's no older farmhouse on the west side of Moyer Rd today, but there are 2 old farmhouses on the east side that may have been their neighbors' homes.
The 1910 US Census for Royalton had a family named Huth with husband August 61, wife Hanna 62, and grandson Harold 3 with the same neighbors, Rensing and Haack. This was almost certainly Mary Huth's family, whose surname was mistakenly listed as Hoot in the 1892 and 1900 census, possibly because the census taker misunderstood their name. The root of their surname is hout in German, which sounds a lot like hoot in English.
Johanna's maiden name is also in question. Johanna/Anna Huth's maiden name was given as Giertz, Yotch, Goepsch, and Yurtz on various obits/marriage records. Unfortunately, her obit doesn't mention her maiden or previously married name. Johanna was likely married before she married August Huth since they had stepchildren. So, one of those names may have been her former husband's surname. For the 2 youngest children (Alice and Albert, who August fathered), their marriage records gave their mother's maiden name respectively as Yotch and Yurtz. All of these names might have been the same name being misunderstood/misspelled because of a heavy German accent, or one of them may have been her maiden name and another her former husband's name.
August Huth's obituary states that three children were his stepdaughters, which implies that Johanna was married before immigrating with August. It's possible then that Mary Huth was also a stepdaughter and that only the last two children, Alice and Albert, born in America, were August's. However, nothing on FamilySearch currently indicates multiple fathers/husbands.
In 1892, the Huths/Hoots lived on Telegraph Rd near Jacob Behe between Gasport and Middleport, later moving to their farm on Moyer Rd in Royalton mentioned in Johanna Huth's obituary less than 3 miles from William Kleinhans' farm on Akron Rd. Mary and William likely met through a church function, even though they may have attended different Lutheran churches. After Mary died, her parents seemed to have lost touch with their grandchildren, perhaps because William remarried Augusta Siebert in 1906, so the children had a stepmother.
An attempt was made to find the Huth/Hoot family's immigration records, but there are far too many Huths in the ship passenger lists to be certain which ones are theirs.
Two trends are more present here than in the other Kleinhans branches. Of the roughly 80 obituaries below, about half (40) mention the Lutheran church, including recent obits. So for one reason or another, the Huths have seemingly remained faithful to the Lutheran religion, perhaps more than any other Kleinhans branch. The other trend is that brothers & sisters, nephews & nieces, uncles & aunts from different families married more often in the Huth branch. While not absent in the other Kleinhans branches, there are just more here. These two trends may not be unrelated. Being mainly rural with only a few churches in a relatively small geographic area with a smaller population meant their families were close and intermarried because they attended the same local Lutheran churches and continued raising their children in the same faith.

✞Dr. Leslie Milton Zoss went in peace to the Lord on December 14, 2014. He had just celebrated his 88th birthday. Born in Lockport, New York on November 23, 1926, he was the eldest son of the late Esther and Elmer C. Zoss. He married his wife, Carolyn, in 1949. She was the love of his life. They were blessed to have recently enjoyed their 65th anniversary in June of 2014.
Dr. Zoss served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the Army from 1945-1946. He did his basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and was selected to learn Japanese for service in Nagasaki as part of a special military police unit whose mission was to expose and arrest members of the U.S military and Japanese citizens who were selling food, supplies, and equipment on the black market to the Chinese.
He did his undergraduate studies at Valparaiso University and subsequently received both a Masters degree in 1950 and a Ph. D. in Mechanical Engineering in 1952, from Purdue University. After successfully defending his thesis, Dr. Zoss became a Research Engineer for Taylor Instrument Company in Rochester, New York where he co-developed a training course in mechanical instrumentation which was later published as the text books: Frequency Response for Process Control and Theory and Application of Industrial Process Control. Dr. Zoss left Taylor in 1958 to accept a professorship in Mechanical Engineering at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana, where he taught until 1985. During his tenure at VU, Dr. Zoss acted as Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department with special leadership in the area of student research. He was foundational in creating research relationships between students and industry partners.
In addition to his teaching position, Dr. Zoss consulted for a number of industrial firms including Shell Oil, Exxon and Eli Lilly Pharmaceutical Company. He assisted Eli Lilly in many operations including the large scale production of synthetic insulin, optimization of Lilly’s capsule production plants, and in developing training programs for newly hired engineers. Over the course of his career, Dr. Zoss authored many technical articles and books. His textbook: Applied Instrumentation in the Process Industries is still a required text on many college engineering programs.
Dr. Zoss was an active member in several professional engineering societies, receiving many awards and honors for his work. ✞THE NIAGARA SUN, LOCKPORT, N. Y. TUESDAY, MAY 18, 1909. Huth - The funeral services of the late Ferdinand Huth [sic, see note below] were held at the home of Ernest Weber, 299 Ontario street, Saturday afternoon, April 15th, the Rev. Mr. Lober officiated. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, among which was a large wreath from the Hydrant Hose company. The bearers were Fred Fisher, August Weber, Fred Reggentin, Theodore Gotthschalt, Frank. Behrens and Gus Bluhm. The interment was in the family lot at Cold Spring Cemetery.
note- This appears to be the obituary for Sophia (Drier) Huth who died in 1909 instead of her husband Ferdinand Huth. There were two Fred/Ferdinand Huth FindAGrave memorials with different years, one for 1909 with no gravestone and one for 1914 with a gravestone. The 1914 memorial is likely the correct one for Fred. However, the 1909 obituary for Ferdinand Huth mentions Ernest Weber who was married to Louise Huth, Fred's sister, and August Weber seemingly Ernest's brother. Other Huths were in the area including another Fred Huth who worked for the Raduns farm in Royalton. Nevertheless, it seems more likely that the newspaper made a simple mistake and printed Ferdinand Huth instead of Sophia Huth accidentally mistaking the husband for the wife. If you read the obit carefully there's no mention of gender.
✞THE NIAGARA DEMOCRAT, LOCKPORT, N. Y. FRIDAY, MAY 14, 1909. Huts, Sophia [sic, see note below], wife of Ferdinand Huts [sic], died at their residence in Newfane, May 12, 1909, aged 27 years. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, two sons, Walter and Harold, father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. John Drier of Lockport, six brothers and two sisters, Charles of Rapids, WIllam of Pendleton, Fred of the town of Lockport, John, Jr., of Newfane, Henry and Chriss [sic], Mrs. Muchow of Lockport, Mrs. Edwin Minkle of town of Lockport. The funeral will take place Saturday, May 15th, at 2 o'clock from the residence of her brother-in-law, Ernest Weber, 298 Ontario street, and at 2:30 o'clock from the Saxton Street Courch, Interment In Cold Springs cemetery.
note- So they weren't satisfied with mistaking Sophia's name once they did it again and misspelled her husband's name too. At least the other names seem all right.
✞Amherst Bee THURSDAY, JULY 8, 1915 - Mr. and Mrs. Augustus [sic] Stern attended the funeral of Mrs. Stern's brother, Mr. Fred Huth of Newfane, last Friday.
note- Although Fred died in 1914 this newspaper article about his sister Anna (Huth) Stern and her husband attending his funeral in July 1915 is completely unexplainable.

✞After a courageous battle with cancer, Doreen passed away to heaven on August 23, 2020. Doreen was born in Clarence Center, New York on June 28, 1936. She was the daughter of the late Harold Huth and Pauline (Knapp) Huth. Affectionately known as "Do", she came to Akron with her mother and late sister (Janice Walker) in the 40's and was a Village of Akron resident almost all of her life. Her residence since 1967 was on Main Street where she raised three sons, Craig (Sandra) Wilkins of Akron, Chris (Suzanne) Wilkins of East Amherst, and Terry (Robyn) Wilkins of Corfu.
Doreen loved her maternal grandchildren, Shawn, Pauline, Orrie, Cody, and Aaron; as well as extended grandchildren, Lisa and Ben. The family was blessed to watch her with her five great-granddaughters, Ema Jo, Kayleigh, Addison, and Gabriella. Baby Angelina died during childbirth. Known as Grandma GG to her great-granddaughters, they recently sat with her and took turns reading pages from her favorite childhood book, "Little Rag Doll" that she was given as a child in the 1930's.
Doreen graduated from Akron High School at age 16 and went on to study college courses in the clerical field. She applied those skills with her involvement as a Founding Charter Member of the Akron Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. She married at 18 and worked at a handful of businesses in the area. Later, she would own her own business, Do's Pounder Store on Main Road in Akron.
When family, including her niece Connie and friend Jean, would stop to visit they would find her sitting within arm's reach of her Bible and her companion "Skittles", the bird, looking over her shoulder. As an avid walker who had each step measured; you could often see her on Main Street and in Russell Park visiting with merchants and friends.
Doreen enjoyed one on one time with her sons. She often attended country music concerts with her eldest son Craig. She was a big fan of Johnny Cash and the Statler Brothers, collecting their video and audio recordings. She was Craig's biggest fan, and supported and encouraged him in his music endeavors.
Her one on one time with middle son, Chris, was often spent studying and memorizing Bible scripture. In her travels to Colorado Springs, Colorado while visiting Chris, as he studied there in the Navigators Ministry, she found and loved the Glen Eyrie Castle. Chris will officiate at her services.
Her favorite one on one time with youngest son, Terry, was spent with the two of them in a small fishing boat on the waters of Lake Ontario, near Point Breeze and Olcott. The same waters she fished and boated in with her father as a pre-teen. Her three boys will place the flowers from her services in the currents there to float out to the lake in her memory.
As per her wishes, there will be no Funeral or Visitation Services. Her Celebration of Life to be held on Saturday, September 19, 2020, at 1 PM, in the Eastern Hills Church 8445 Greiner Road Williamsville, New York 14221. Walt re-located to Akron, NY in 1953 searching for employment. It has been said that Akron has never been the same since he arrived. He found work in the gypsum mines of Western New York. In the mines while working for Georgia Pacific he set off dynamite, hauled gypsum and worked “on top” manufacturing wall board. Walt also found employment at several of Akron’s taverns, working part time as a bartender and manager. After the gypsum plant closed and several of the taverns went out of business, he drove truck, did lawn care and spent fifteen years as a school bus driver for the Akron School District from where he retired.
His passion was singing, he knew and sang the words to countless country music and other genres of music. Affectionately known as “The Birdman” he was a fun-loving carefree man. He was quick with a joke and a smile. A master euchre player. He served his community as a volunteer fireman. During his time as an Akron fireman, he fought some of Akron’s most historical fires. He was also the captain of their bowling team and a star softball pitcher, playing the game for well over fifty years. He was the lead bugler for the Akron Fire Company marching band. He also sky dived and rode a classic full-dress Indian motorcycle.
As a youth he lived in both the city Pittsburgh in southside flats and the little town of Bellwood, PA on a dirt road named Kerbaugh. He attended Bellwood-Antis School District where he said he would go to school to eat his lunch. His school memories included playing football for the school’s team, traveling central PA to play ball. His love for the game continued all his life as a Buffalo Bills fan who would organize bus excursions to the Bills games for the fire company and friends. He was an avid reader. His favorite book being the Bible that he read cover to cover nineteen times. Bible verses that he frequented were John 8:7 and Matthew 7:1.
He leaves behind a sister, Virginia Wilkins Pfahler of Pinecroft, PA. Sister in law Rose Zamaris Wilkins of Fallentimber, PA. Children, Walter “Craig” Wilkins (Sandra), Chris Wilkins (Suzanne), Terry Wilkins (Robyn), Christan Heidi Anderson, Fallon Wilkins Kumro (Darren), Joseph Wilkins. Nineteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased are siblings, Joseph Wilkins, Paul Wilkins, Benjamin Franklin Wilkins, Rosella Margaret Wilkins Moceika, Fred Wilkins, Raymond D Wilkins. And a great grandchild Angelina Peluso. Walter Wilkins will return to his boyhood home of Bellwood PA and be buried near his mother in Logan Valley Cemetery, a football field is distance away from, and within sight of his alma mater.

►Obituary: click to show/hide
✞Janice Duer (nee Huth) Walker died peacefully of natural causes while under Warsaw hospice care at her daughter's home in Attica, NY, on July 1, 2015. Janice was born 3/13/1932, in her parents' apartment in the historic J. Eshelman Building, Goodrich Rd, Clarence Center, NY. Her parents were Pauline (nee Knapp) and Harold Huth; as the eldest of their two children, her younger sister is Mrs. Doreen (Walter) Wilkins, Akron, NY. Janice was a 1949 graduate of Akron Central High School, Akron, NY. In 1950 she married and decades later was divorced from dairy farmer, Edward J. Walker, who is deceased. The couple initially owned an Aberdeen Angus farm on McNeeley Rd, Akron, while her husband also worked at the nearby Carborundum plant. Approximately a decade into their marriage, the couple then purchased a family-run Holstein dairy farm on Sumner Road in Darien.
Janice was predeceased by 3 of her children: infant Kathy, and adult siblings Loren, and Kim Walker. Janice is survived by 3 of her 6 children- her eldest, Cheryl L. Walker, Batavia; and the two youngest, Lars B. Walker, Ephrata, PA; and Mrs. Connie (Peter) Balon, Cascade Rd, Attica. Janice is also survived by 5 grandchildren- Courtney and Brett Walker, Phoenix, AZ; Brandon Walker, Batavia; Mrs. Carrie (Gary) Talley, Youngsville, NC; and Mrs. Nicolette (Matthew) Fraterrigo, Attica. She leaves 4 beloved great-grandchildren: Caiden Talley, NC; and Gianna and identical twin sisters Alina and Viviana Fraterrigo, Attica. Janice also joyfully gained a granddaughter and great-granddaughter through marriage, Mrs. Sarah (Joe) Lawton and their infant daughter Cailee.
An artistic person and animal lover, Janice was a capable and hard-working homemaker, farm wife; and retired Certified Nurse's Aide at the Genesee County Nursing Home, Batavia. She showed fortitude in life, and made substantial personal sacrifices for her children and grandchildren. In retirement, at her home on the corner of Hopkins Rd. in East Pembroke, Janice enjoyed flower gardening, the company of her pet dog, watching her TV "slop opera," and completing the Daily's crossword puzzle. A cherished Mom, she will be sorely missed by her family, and is wished God's blessings. No funeral hours are scheduled. A prayer, "Safely Home" saved and previously read at Janice's maternal grandfather, the Reverend Clyde Dire Knapp's funeral will be read at her graveside. Her remains will be buried in the Brainard Cemetery, Attica, NY. Memorials in Janice's honor may be made to Warsaw Home Care and Hospice, to the American Heart Association, or to the ASPCA.

with Homestead
Edith was the sister of Edward Buehring, Susanna (Kleinhans) Buehring's husband. Albert was Mary (Huth) Kleinhans' brother. So a Buehring sister and brother married a Huth male and Kleinhans female, respectively, who were uncle and niece. So, Albert became Edward's uncle-in-law while also being his brother-in-law. And Edith became Susanna's aunt-in-law while also being her sister-in-law. Edward Buehring's obit mentions his sister was Edith Huth.
There's more. Albert and Edith's farm was on Haseley Rd, as shown below. In the 1930 US Census, their neighbors were her brother, Charles Buehring, and his wife, Amalea Haseley. So there's a good chance their farm was part of a larger Haseley farm that Edith obtained from her sister-in-law, Amalea.
Their other 1930 US Census neighbors were Walter and Augusta Giertz, with a daughter named Helen, who married Carl Huth likely soon after the census. In 1935, they had another daughter named Gladys Giertz, who married Clarence Huth after he had served in WWII. They had their first child, Arnold Huth, in 1951 when Gladys was 16/17. They must have separated after their third child, Alan, was born in 1955 because Clarence's 1967 obit doesn't mention Gladys. In 1977, she remarried Edwin Dunn, who died in 2016. Edwin's obit mentions his stepsons, Albert and Arnold Huth, who predeceased him. Arnold's obit mentions his mother, Gladys Giertz Huth Dunn. Albert's obituary is missing, although there's a newspaper piece about his fatal motorcycle accident at age 24.
So, if all that isn't confusing enough, the Giertz name is also mixed up with Albert's mother, Johanna Huth. Her maiden name was recorded as Giertz on her daughter Anna's marriage record. Her obituary doesn't mention her maiden name. FamilySearch has Yotch, and Goepsch is mentioned in Louise (Huth) Weber's obit (see above). So your guess is as good as anyone else's.

Clarence and Kenneth Huth's obituaries (see below) mention Haseley Rd, so they likely lived and farmed here with their mother Edith until they died in 1967 and 1956. Edith died in 1983.
