with Home
After spending her childhood on a farm , Louise and her Canadian English/Scottish husband Thomas Harper moved to the city of Lockport, NY (see 1890-1900 Homesteads & Census), and lived mainly at 26 Evans St. (see below) near downtown on the east side with their children. Thomas worked as a laborer and watchman at factories. Reflecting the changing economic times, Louise was the oldest and first Kleinhans grandchild to shun farming as a livelihood. Several other younger grandchildren also abandoned farming for paid factory jobs. Louise and Thomas had 3 children, 15 grandchildren, and over 30 great-grandchildren.
26 Evans St., Lockport, NY, built in 1900
Louise and Thomas Harper's house was near downtown. Also close by were the factories Thomas worked at, the schools their kids attended, and her sister Augusta's home. Their son and daughter-in-law John T. and Alice Harper lived in this house until they moved to Florida in 1959.

✞Truck driver in hit-and-run pleads guilty | Latest Headlines | buffalonews.com BY THOMAS J. PROHASKA, NIAGARA REPORTER - A young man who ran over and killed a schoolmate with his pickup truck after a marijuana deal last fall pleaded guilty to a felony Thursday in Niagara County Court.
Anthony J. Cescon, 18, of Ohio Street, Lockport, admitted to leaving the scene of a fatal accident without reporting it to police. That's a Class D felony, and Judge Sara Sheldon Sperrazza could send him to state prison when Cescon returns to court Nov. 30. The heaviest sentence Sperrazza could impose is 2 1/3 to seven years.
Tammy Mottorn, the mother of 17-year-old victim Adam Mottorn, made it clear after court that she wasn't happy with how the case turned out. "I think the justice system is backwards," Tammy Mottorn said. "You can kill someone and get your life back in two years." Adam's grandmother, Karen DeFlippo, took a milder view of the case. "It was a tragic accident," she said.
Assistant District Attorney Timothy R. Lundquist said, "We looked long and hard at all the possibilities as to what would be the appropriate charge." He said several different law enforcement agencies analyzed the case, which is why it took 10 months to bring it to court. The plea was entered without a grand jury indictment.
The incident occurred Nov. 17 near Mottorn's home on Porter Street. Cescon and another teenager who was not charged drove there to obtain some marijuana from Mottorn, Lockport Detective Capt. Richard L. Podgers said. "They were just buying a little tiny bit, but they didn't intend to pay for it," Podgers said. What apparently happened at about 4 p.m. that Tuesday is that Cescon tried to speed off while Mottorn was still leaning into the vehicle through an open passenger side window, and he was dragged under the pickup and killed. "The only real witnesses we had were the people in the car," Podgers said. They are the source for the leaning-in-through-the-window version.
"They went there with the intent of robbing him," Tammy Mottorn claimed. "[Cescon] knew Adam was in the window and he sped off." "We have no evidence that it was intentional," Lundquist said.
Podgers said, "We had one non-involved witness who said [Mottorn] was struck with the front of the vehicle. It's more likely that the version of the people in the car is more closely aligned with the accident reconstruction." The court papers accused Cescon of fleeing to a relative's house, trying to hide the pickup and not reporting the accident until 16 hours later. Defense attorney Herbert L. Greenman said in court, "There may be some issues with what he did and didn't do." He was not available later to answer questions from reporters, and Cescon refused to be interviewed.
Podgers said, "If we could have shown it was an armed robbery, we could have brought much more serious charges. But since it was a petty crime, a petit larceny, we couldn't."
✞Loved ones remember Adam Mottorn | lockportjournal.com By Britney Milazzo, Nov 18, 2010 - Dozens of family and friends of Adam Mottorn’s celebrated his life Wednesday night at a vigil held in his memory at the Porter Street scene where Mottorn lived and died.
“It took a large part of my heart the day he died,” Mottorn’s grandmother, Karen DeFlippo, said. But his mother, Tammy Mottorn, said they are remembering the life he led, not his tragic death.
On Oct. 29, Mottorn would have been 18. Instead, less than a month later marks the one-year anniversary of when he was killed.
“I was there. I went out to warm up the car to get takeout and went back inside, and the boys were all talking,” Tammy Mottorn said. “When I came back out, I saw Adam on the ground and ran to him. No mother deserves to see their child like that.”
Mottorn was hit by fellow Lockport High School classmate Anthony J. Cescon’s pickup truck after what Lockport police say was a “drug deal gone bad.”
Capt. Rick Podgers said Cescon, 18, of 141 Ohio St., admitted to meeting Mottorn regarding the sale of marijuana, planned on not paying for the drugs, then fled the scene.
“He is heartless and never showed any remorse to our family,” DeFlippo said of Cescon. “He is guilty for killing Adam. In my eyes, he is a cold-blooded monster.”
Cescon was charged with felony second-degree vehicular assault and leaving the scene of an accident, but pleaded guilty in September to leaving the scene of an accident and not turning himself in to police until 16 hours after the incident.
He faces up to seven years in state prison at sentencing Nov. 30.
Mottorn’s family said they hope Cescon gets the maximum sentence. But Mottorn’s mother said she thinks “he deserves more.”
“My son was murdered and he’s not getting the justice he deserves,” Tammy Mottorn said. “After his death, I found a part of me was dead. I have a hard time living without him.”
Mottorn’s stepfather, Dan White, said he is going to miss Mottorn’s calls to him every day at 3 p.m.
“I won’t get those phone calls ever again,” White said. “He was like a son to me, a best friend. He’d call after school every day and we’d go out and do a lot of outdoor activities.”
Friends said Mottorn’s favorite thing to do was skateboard at Outwater Park and go dirt-biking. They described him as “funny,” “helpful,” and “respectful.”
“I let the kids build a half-pipe in my driveway so they could practice as much as possible,” Kathy Evoy said.
Evoy’s son, Kyle, was best friends with Mottorn since they were in second grade, and they were “inseparable,” Evoy said. Unfortunately, Kyle could not make it to Mottorn’s vigil because he was in South Carolina, but contributed to a fundraiser Mottorn’s family is holding to buy Mottorn a headstone.
“He deserves something real special like that,” White said.
For $5, Mottorn’s family is selling car decals that say “In memory of Adam Mottorn.” All proceeds will go toward raising money for a $2,000 headstone for Mottorn.
After drinks and pizza donated by Frankie’s Pizza & Subs at Mottorn’s residence where the vigil was held, visitors’ tear-filled eyes dried out, and laughter began as friends of his told stories.
“We can’t sit and cry all the time. He was a great person, and we need to remember who he was,” Mottorn’s sister, Stephanie, said.
“Adam would give the shirt off his back for anyone in need,” DeFlippo said. “His 9-year-old brother, Tyler, went everywhere with Adam. We call him Adam’s little shadow.”
Tammy Mottorn said the two were very close.
“Tyler really looked up to Adam,” she said.
On a Facebook website dedicated to Mottorn, family and friends continue to express their mourning and remembrances for Mottorn.
While the most recent posts are, “Happy birthday,” “Happy Halloween,” and one-year remembrance notes, one friend, Zachary Speer, says: “Adam, people are like snowflakes — each one special in their own way! I think you were that very special one! R.I.P.”
And although Mottorn is no longer here, his loved ones said they will never forget him.
“He’s gone, but not forgotten. He will be here with me forever,” Tammy Mottorn said as she pointed to her heart.
✞Cescon sentenced to prison in death of friend by Britney Milazzo Lockport Union-Sun & Journal Dec 1, 2010 - Anthony J. Cescon entered Niagara County Court on Tuesday morning in tears as he was sentenced to two to six years in state prison for running over and killing Adam Mottorn with his pickup truck Nov. 17, 2009.
But leaving the courtroom in handcuffs with a smile, and threatening a US&J reporter and photographer that he would “give the finger” if we photographed him, Cescon said in a stern voice, “it was an accident. That’s all I got to say.”
Cescon, 18, 141 Ohio St., was charged by Lockport police with second-degree vehicular assault and leaving the scene of a fatal vehicle-pedestrian accident, but pleaded guilty in September to leaving the scene and not reporting the crime until 16 hours later.
Lockport police Capt. Rick Podgers said Cescon admitted to police last year that he and another teen planned on meeting Mottorn, then 17, in the sale of marijuana and not paying for it. Cescon reportedly admitted to then running over Mottorn “accidentally” and fleeing the Porter Street crime scene where Mottorn lived and died.
At a candlelight vigil held on the one-year anniversary of Mottorn’s death, his mother, Tammy Mottorn, said it was the worst nightmare to see her son dying.
“ I was there. I went out to warm up the car to get takeout and went back inside, and the boys were all talking,” Tammy Mottorn said. “When I came back out, I saw Adam on the ground and ran to him. No mother deserves to see their child like that.”
The other unnamed teen involved — a Lockport High School student along with Mottorn and Cescon — was not charged in the incident.
Three days after Cescon was charged and remanded to Niagara County Jail, he was released on $25,000 bail.
The maximum sentence could have been 2 1/3 to seven years for the felonies.
“He cries a lot. He’s a young man who wears his emotions on his sleeve. He was devastated, not for himself, but for what happened here,” Cescon’s attorney Herb Greenman said. “He’s the antithesis of what he was a year ago ... I wish he adjusted his life before this, else we wouldn’t be here.”
“You said he cries a lot, but I bet my life he doesn’t cry as much as Adam’s mother,” Judge Sara Sheldon Sperrazza responded back as she also added that Cescon was “the product of an enabling family ... that’s actually what brought you to this fatal day.”
She also ordered Cescon to pay a $5,375 fine.
As the courtroom was filled with family and friends of the victim and suspect, Tammy Mottorn said she is having a hard time moving on since her son’s death.
“I just actually started counseling because I can’t get through everyday,” she said.
And while satisfied with the sentencing outcome, Tammy Mottorn said she did not find Cescon’s remorse truthful. She said her opinion was heightened after Cescon tried to start a fight with her nephew at a recent family funeral after being asked to leave.
“It was immature and it shows that he did not learn yet so no, I don’t feel like he has any remorse,” Tammy Mottorn said. “Justice in my heart will never be served. At the end, all I want him to realize is that what he did wrong. If he can do that and be a better man in the future then we did something to save him.”
Although Cescon seemed remorseful in court as he apologized to the Mottorn family, Sperrazza said he was not remorseful with the probation department and only thought of himself.
“ ‘What’s going to happen to me’ is all it was about,” Sperrazza said.
“Is it true or isn’t it? I really hope he was (remorseful) because he took the life of my son,” Tammy Mottorn said in response to Cescon’s apology.
And although still bitter toward Cescon, Tammy Mottorn said she has forgiven him.
“I just know that Adam wasn’t the type of kid to hold a grudge for very long and I know that Adam wouldn’t want us to hate this boy for his actions,” Tammy Mottorn said. “We don’t hate him, we just wish he would have stopped and try to help (Adam). I don’t think he intended on killing (Adam), but he didn’t stop and that’s what bothers me the most.”
While Mottorn’s family and friends are going on without him, they said the only way to do that is to console with each other.
“I just hang out with family a lot and we stay close. We’re each other’s rock,” Mottorn’s cousin and best friend Nick Cousins said.
Cousins, who was about a year younger than Mottorn said he looked up to him.
“I pretty much looked up to him. I saw him everyday ... and I learned a lot from him,” Cousins said. “We were inseparable. I’m just trying to go on.”
As for Mottorn’s sister Stephanie and younger brother Tyler, Tammy Mottorn said the death is hurting them.
“They’re devastated. You miss him, huh?” Tammy Mottorn asked Tyler, 9. He just nodded his head as a tear rolled down his cheek. “We always called him Adam’s little shadow. He followed his brother everywhere and loved hanging out with him.”
Mottorn’s stepfather, who was like a father to Mottorn said they raised about $300 in a fundraiser to help buy a headstone for him.
“The community stepped right up and is helping us out,” Dan White said.
For $5, an “in memory” bumper sticker was sold to those who wanted one. White also said a headstone carver in Newfane may also be helping out with the rest of the cost for a headstone that is worth about $1,500.
But Mottorn’s family and friends are not the only ones impacted by Mottorn’s death, so is Lockport High School.
“We hung out pretty much everyday. I lived pretty much around the corner. I’d spend the night at his house and he’s spend the night at mine. Tyler would come over and he’d hang with us and skate with us,” Mottorn’s best friend Jeremy Speer said as he also highlighted on the atmosphere at school. “It’s calmed down at lot, but everyone’s still kind of sad about it. It’s just an ongoing thing.”
This year, Mottorn would have been a senior at Lockport High School with dreams to get into mechanics in his future, Tammy Mottorn said.“He was a hard worker with a bright future,” she said.
With Mottorn’s loss, comes a negative attitude toward Cescon from many students at the school.
“Everyone hates him pretty much. No one wants him in school to look at his face,” Speer said. “Teachers don’t really express they’re feelings too much, but they’re still sad I think.”
A message was left by a US&J reporter Monday afternoon for Principal Frank Movali’s for his comments on the situation, but no response was returned.
Tammy Mottorn said she and her family received a card with old photos of Adam from administrators at North Park Middle School giving their sympathy.
“They were great and supportive there,” Tammy Mottorn said. “The staff at the school loved him and showed us so much kindness in this tragedy.”
Mottorn’s family said they are thankful for the kind support the community has shown them.
A candlelight vigil was held two weeks ago on the anniversary of Mottorn’s death. Hundreds of family and friends attended.
“I think we’re going to have another vigil next year and make this an annual thing,” Tammy Mottorn said. “(Adam) deserves to always be remembered.”
