with Homestead
August was naturalized in 1862 in Niagara County witnessed by his presumed brother Frederick Kleinhans. In the 1870 US Census, August was a farmer, but in the 1880 US Census, he worked at a sawmill although he was likely still farming with the help of his son Herman. The 1890 US Census is unavailable because of a fire. After August's death in 1899, a 1908 map has Mrs. M. Kleinhans on their farm with H. Kleinhans (likely Herman) next door to the north possibly on a different part of August's original farm. By the 1920 US Census, August's son Herman was listed by himself on the farm because his father, his mother Maria, and his first wife Hulda had all died and he hadn't married Anna yet (see below).
August and Maria had 7 children and 11 grandchildren. August's obituary has not been found in any newspaper after many searches.
Like his brother Frederick, August and his family likely initially lived in a log cabin and eventually had a wood frame house. However, August's youngest daughters Ida, Magdelene, Rose, and Anna lived in cities (Lockport and Akron, NY) instead of rural Wolcottsville, and their husbands weren't farmers. Also like his brother, August wasn't involved in the American Civil War and presumably never owned a car or telephone since they weren't commonly available before his death. And again like his brother, he seemed poor but August augmented his financial resources by working at a sawmill when he was about 50. He also worked for the Town of Royalton as a collector.

In the 1910, 1920, 1930, and 1940 US Census for Newstead, Erie County Malvina and Henry were farming next to Malvina's first cousin once removed Elnora (Jago) Lindke's family on the same road within 1/4 mile of each other. (see 1910-1920 Homesteads & Census) Elnora's brother-in-law and sister's-in-law families were neighbors as well. And in 1920, Malvina's first cousin Wilhelmina (Kleinhans) Jago moved in with her daughter Elnora. Living this close to each other meant all their children attended the same one-room schoolhouse and likely all went to the same church in Wolcottsville.

This road is named Koespel because the Koespels lived here for many years. On the 1880 Newstead Town Map this property was owned by J. Koepsal, Johann F Koepsel Henry's father, who was married to Rosella Bruning whose family owned the farm next to theirs. This house may be their original home or there's another house next door that was built in 1820. Their farm was about 2 miles from Wolcottsville to the north across Tonawanda Creek. (see 1910-1920 Homesteads & Census page for a 1909 Newstead Town Map from Historic Map Works) Elnora (Jago) and John Lindke's homestead, shown on Frederick's main page, and this house are almost identical and about 1/4 mile apart on the same road.

In 1908 August (Sr)'s two granddaughters 15 y.o. Dora and 12 y.o. Sylvia, Herman Kleinhans' children, had a mishap with a horse and buggy they had borrowed. The horse broke free, dumped the buggy and passengers, fell, and broke its neck on Bunker Hill Rd. which is near Dysingers' Corner and about 2 miles from Wolcottsville. The girls were not injured.
*** THE NIAGARA DEMOCRAT, LOCKPORT, N. Y. FRIDAY, JULY 1, 1910 - Mr. and Mrs. Herman Kliehans [sic] and Mrs. August Kliehans [sic] spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. William Kliehans [sic] of South Royalton.
note- In 1910 Herman and his mother Mrs. August (Maria Scharlow) Kleinhans visited the family of Frederick Kleinhans' son William in South Royalton on Akron Rd. This was Aunt Maria and first cousin Herman visiting nephew and first cousin William. This is the only newspaper piece found that shows the two Kleinhans families were familiar and friendly with each other even though it happened after the two presumed brothers Frederick and August had both died. At the time William's youngest children Norman 15, Agnes 13, and Richard 7 may have been at home. Herman may have had Sylvia 14 and John 11 with him for the visit. Herman and Maria's homes in Wolcottsville were only about 2 1/2 miles from William's home on Akron Rd. This could have been an attempt by Aunt Maria to repair a rift in the Kleinhans family although there's no actual proof or direct indication of a problem between them.

Before Dora Kleinhans married Albert Schalge she worked as a domestic servant in 1910 Royalton much like her second cousins Augusta, Mary, and Paulena Kleinhans did. Albert's obituary stated he was a farm operator. However, he was not on the property maps for the Town of Newstead near Akron in 1908 or 1938, but his father Wilheim/William Schalge was in the 1938 map on Bloomingdale Rd east of Akron. So Albert possibly lived and worked on his father's farm. Before 1942 he had bought his house on Cedar St. just north of the Village of Akron (see photo below). Albert was interviewed at the Erie County Fair in Hamburg, NY in 1960 by the Buffalo Courier-Express newspaper (see below).
Albert's obituary was published in the Batavia Daily News and the Medina Journal-Register. Unfortunately, Dora's obit can't be found. Residents in Akron and the surrounding areas including Wolcottsville sometimes chose the Lockport, Medina, Batavia, or Buffalo/Niagara Falls newspapers to publish obits. Akron also had several local newspapers published in a wide range of years. Unfortunately, they're not online. They're only available in the Town of Newstead, Erie County public library, and a limited number of other libraries. Albert and Dora did not choose any other newspapers for their obits as some other Akron residents of this branch did not either.

Sylvia and her older sister Dora had a serious mishap with a horse and buggy when they were teens. Several years later in 1917, Sylvia visited friends from Lockport in Pasadena, CA for 6 months (see article below). That's a 3-4 day 2,200-mile train trip that was certainly pricey. In 1918, while still in California Sylvia married Robert in Los Angeles on July 5. By 1920 they had their only child Homer in NY. They rented a house in the City of Buffalo while Robert worked as a laborer. By 1930 and through the 1940s they had moved back to California and rented a house in Los Angeles. By 1950 they followed their son Homer to Alaska where they spent their last days near him and his children and were buried nearby in Homer, AK. (just a coincidence)

✞Anchorage Daily News April 9, 1997 Longtime Alaska resident Homer S. Thompson, 77, died April 3, 1997, at South Peninsula Hospital in Homer. A memorial service was at Faith Lutheran Church in Homer. The Rev. Dennis J. Neels officiated.
Mr. Thompson was born Sept. 3, 1919, in Buffalo, N.Y. He was raised in Buffalo and Los Angeles. Mr. Thompson was a graduate of John Marshall High School in Los Angeles and the Frank Wiggins Trade School. Mr. Thompson served 11 years with the Army Air Force and the U.S. Air Force at various locations, including six years of service in Alaska. Mr. Thompson came to Alaska in 1946 while in the military. He resigned from the Air Force to come back to Alaska after part of a year's service outside Alaska. He and his family moved to Homer in 1953. His initial employment was as manager for the local government, where he served for seven years. Subsequently, he was the first Realtor in Homer and was an officer of the State Association of Realtors. His family wrote: ''Homer was a loner in most of his endeavors to bring benefits to the community of Homer. He was a charter member of the Homer Elks Lodge, and founder of the Homer Winter Carnival and Homer Society of Natural History. He also served as an officer in the Homer Fair Association and the Democratic precinct and was probably best-known for his unceasing efforts to build the Bradley Lake hydroelectric project. Friends estimate that in the course of his years in Homer, he managed almost single-handedly to obtain close to $500 million in government appropriations for public works projects in Homer.''
He is survived by his wife, Frances of Homer; daughters, Jacquelyn Cox and Bonnie Marie Stark; sons, Robert T. Thompson and Charles R.S. Thompson; and a grandchild, Andrew Thompson. Donations may be made to the Elks National Foundation, c/o Homer Elks Lodge 2127, 215 W. Jenny Lane, Homer 99603 or to any other organization of the donor's choice. August (Jr) worked for the widow of August Raduns Dena (Teifel) Raduns on her farm when he was 45/46 in the 1920 US Census. (see 1910-1920 Homesteads & Census) He married Dena in 1923 and lived together on her Hunter/ Chesnut Ridge Rd. farm until his death (see 1930-1940 Homesteads & Census). In image 11, ED 118 of the 1930 US Census for Royalton August (Jr) Kleinhaus [sic], wife Tena [sic] Raduns Kleinhaus [sic], and step-daughter Leona Raduns were on their farm at the west end of Hunter Rd. According to a 1939 Niagara County Rural Survey Mrs. Dene [sic] Kleinhans owned property just east of Griswold St. on Hunter Rd. that's now named Chesnut Ridge Rd. Next door to Mrs. Dina Kleinhans was widow Lavina Hunter for whom the road was likely named. August (Jr) Kleinhans' obituary states his home was on Hunter Rd. Dina/Dena's obituary states she died at her daughter Mrs. Earl Schad's home at 9450 Chesnut Ridge Rd just a 1/4 mile west of her former Chesnut Ridge Rd/Hunter Rd farm. Dena's brother Frederick Teifel (d. 1943), the father of Agnes (Kleinhans) Teifel's husband, farmed about a mile east of Dena's farm on the same road.
Dena was the aunt of Frederick Teifel (Jr) who was married to Agnes Kleinhans, William Kleinhans' daughter and Frederick Kleinhans' granddaughter. Dena was also the aunt of Hanna (Raduns) Jago, Frederick Kleinhans' grandson Fred Jago's wife. Surprising or not Dena's short first name was misspelled repeatedly in about every way imaginable.

This is the likely location of August & Dena (Tiefel) Raduns' original house/farm on Chestnut Ridge/ Hunter Rd. 1/2 mile to the east of Griswold Rd on the south side as indicated on the 1908 Royalton Town Historic map. August Kleinhans also lived here after marrying Dena in 1923. The house is the same style as many houses built then with a newer addition on the back and a large new barn/garage to the right.
