John 6:60-71
Many of Jesus' Disciples Desert Him
60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”
61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”
66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.
68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”
70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)
In questions we can find meaning to different things...We might ask the question, "What is the meaning of life?"...We might ask, "How should I live my life?"...We might ask, Is there another world, is there a heaven, a Kingdom of God?"...
Questions surrounded Jesus when He walked and dwelt on earth...Many were asked to Him...And He had many of His Own questions...Some of His many questions were, "Who do you think I AM?", "Do you want to get well?", "What do you want Me to do for you?"...And I think many questions still surround Him...
Jesus wants us to think about both our life here on earth and the eternities...When many of His followers were leaving Him, someone ask Him, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”...He did not answer...He wants us to reflect on His questions and teachings and think about them, even though some, if not many, are difficult...Jesus is eternal and He taught the eternities...When Jesus ask His Twelve Disciples, “You do not want to leave too, do you?”...Peter answered Him, “LORD, to whom shall we go?...You have the words of eternal life...We have come to believe and to know that You are the Holy One of God.”...Then Jesus asks another question, "Have I not chose you, the Twelve?"....Something for the Twelve to dwell on...
Asking questions throughout His ministry was a part and maybe a central part of what He did...By asking all the questions He did, He wants us to learn from His questions in His teachings...And Jesus did not answer all the questions asked of Him...We see that He did not answer the question, "This is a hard teaching, who can accept it?"...And when He does answer questions, we do not find simplicity, in all He says...For me, His questions often bring up more questions...So as I read about Him and His teachings, I wonder why He leaves many questions and ideas unanswered...Because He has the answers to life, all life -both this life and eternal life...He is the Holy One of God, as St. Peter says...And being the Holy One of God is a mystery for many...With many more questions for me rather than answers...And this is because I do have the answers to eternal life...As a child of God who like a child has more questions than answers for His Father...
As we look at the questions that Jesus ask, and even the ones that still surround Him, we can see a Light, that gives us answers and a meaning to life, a Way to lead one's life, and One who often spoke of the Kingdom of Heaven...
