John 14:6
The Way, The Truth, and The Life
6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 5:16-17
God and Jesus are Working
16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working."
Matthew 8:18-20
Following Jesus
18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
Luke 10:38-42
At the Home of Martha and Mary
38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Matthew 6:25-34
Do Not Worry
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Matthew 11:19
Jesus on His Reputation
19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' But wisdom is proved right by her deeds."
Matthew 11:29-30
His Yoke is Easy, and His Burden is Light
29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
Psalm 119:103-105
Your Words are a Path for My Feet
103 How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 I gain understanding from your precepts;
therefore I hate every wrong path.
105 Your word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path.
Jesus was unusual in that He did not have a home or place to lay His head, after a day out teaching and working...He was this Wandering Traveling Teacher, who walked and moved about from place to place...That was His career...And I am not sure it is fair to say He had a career...His work and ministry were His career, and that is what He did...And He did say He was at work, just like His Father, so maybe He also thought as what He did as work...That was His job -out each day meeting and talking and teaching different people...I think, some or many of His day, would call Him a Rabbi or Traveling Rabbi...
And in His particular daily routine, Jesus often sat down with others, He often ate with others that He Himself said that He had gotten the reputation of a glutton and a drunkard for eating so often with people and partaking of wine during the dinner hours...Sometimes He would just talk about eternal life and God...Much like He did with Mary, when He was visiting Martha and Mary...He was just talking to Mary alone...And we learn when Martha opened up her home for Him, that is better to listen to Him than to be off doing other things...Because what He has to say and teach and tell us, is of great importance...
When I think usually think about careers of people and what they did day in and day out, I often think of their particular work and their longevity at their job...For instance, someone might say I was this association or company for twenty, thirty, or forty years, and this is what I did...Those particular people did many of the same things over and over for years in their daily work and in their daily routines...And yet when I think of the most successful Man ever to walk the earth, I think of Jesus...I say and use the word "yet" this because, His career was a very short one...His career lasted only three years...Some might not even call that long enough to be a career...And Jesus had an unusual daily routine...As He walked a lot sometimes many miles, as He traveled from small village to village...So I know walking is good and He had to walk a lot to get around to the next village...There in the different villages and towns, He would meet people...Each day and each month, He would meet many different people...Fellowship is good, and so I know meeting people is good...And the people that He met, He helped...Helping and teaching people is good...
When I think of daily routines and work and careers, I think of a grind, fast-paced, stressed times that each of us had in our daily routines...Yet, somehow I do not picture Jesus with those same stressors...I always picture Him calm and quieting and kindly and slowly taking the time to help others (but I could be wrong on this)...I picture Him as truly comforting...His yoke is really easy, and His burden is light...I do not see Him rushing off someone as He was trying to help them...He took whatever time needed with people to help them or teach them...And I do not picture Him rushed and hurried...
So as Jesus walked from village to village and helped others in the towns He went to, and as He sat down at dinnertime or suppertime, I believe He was taking all of life in as He went through each day...He actually could point out the beautiful birds in the sky flying as He walked along...He would see and watch the beautiful flowers of the field growing and blooming...He would view the beautiful green grasses of the fields, with all of its beauty and see it and enjoy it...He could see, feel, and touch the beauty and joy of life all around Him...And I think His Disciples would have seen, felt, and learned these things from Him...I really think that Jesus' words are a path for our feet...That we truly gain understanding from what He said...And that His words are a lamp for our life, and a light for us as we journey through life...We can find rest for our souls in Him...
