The term "Hagbeadi" refers to both the Hagbeadi as a species and the Hagbeadi as an empire, due to how deeply the two are intertwined. This article covers both. Every Hagbeadi is designed for a specific role in the sprawling bureaucracy from creation. While career autonomy technically exists in the empire, one's choices are usually limited to either a role in the military or a role that supports the military. Specific castes the Hagbeadi come in greatly reinforce the empire's predeterminate nature. The following is a brief summary of the most commonly encountered Hagbeadi castes and bio-engineer products.
"Footmen," Short-statured, disposable units designed for redundancy and infiltration. They are capable of rearranging their flesh and body in the likeness of another form or individual.
"Factories," Massive sessile "biological factories" that take in large quantities of biomass gathered by the Hagbeadi, which is broken down at the molecular level for the primary purpose of effectively mass-producing individuals. Construction of a new factory is a significant undertaking and often requires oversight from other bio-factories.
"Foremen", highly intelligent and cunning individuals of similar appearance to footmen. They are often prioritized for management and officer roles in the empire and share the shapeshifting properties of the foremen.
"Bruisers," Large, bulky units instilled with heavy armor and bio-engineered cannons in their body for frontline combat and menial labor.
"Scavengers," Medium sized units with heightened regenerative ability, used to maintain bio-factories by repairing damage and collecting biomass to ensure streamlined production of goods and individuals.
"Dredgers," Slow moving, four legged units that appear to be used either as pack animals, emergency food, or moral support depending on the situation
"Roamers," Medium to large sized clumps of biomass capable of breaching the gravitational fields of worlds and achieving space travel. These clumps are used to transport units between worlds and construct new factories when on the ground, where they are supported by three retractable limbs used for movement and manipulation.
A lack of reliable sources hinders our understanding on Hagbeadi life and culture, though what we do know is that the Hagbeadi Empire is a heavily bureaucratic totalitarian regime under the rule of nested regional administrators. Apart from vague references to "the emperor" in Hagbeadi mythos, the Hagbeadi Empire does not appear to be centralized under a charismatic strongman as seen in other similar regimes. Rather, local authority is nested in the leader of a regional leader assigned to a numbered zone, which in turn is a component of a planetary administration. Various planetary administrations make up a system administration of a size dependent on the number of Hagbeadi-controlled worlds are present. Further up, different system administrations make up a sector that had borders depending on the needs of the empire as dictated by the head of the megasector the sector is a part of. There are certainly administration levels higher than the megasector; megasector directors almost certainly have to be taking orders from somewhere. However, the scale of megasectors (often consisting of thousands of light-years) makes the study of any further level completely redundant.
Heavy propaganda and nationalist indoctrination pervasive in all aspects of life ensures a deeply loyal and devoted citizenry. The military, the state, and the economy are so deeply integrated into one another that they are effectively the same entity, any sort of economic activity exists under the supervision of a regional administration with the sole purpose to ultimately benefit the military-industrial complex in some manner or another. "Deviant" activities such as crime and dissidence are heavily prosecuted and suppressed. Territories conquered by the Hagbeadi Empire have their resources integrated directly into the state at the expense of the locals, who are either branded as second-class citizenry, used as indentured servants, or driven away entirely depending on their cooperation with the local garrison. Habitable planets capable of supporting life are prime targets for Hagbeadi invasion, so that the native life may be reduced to agriculture to feed the ever-continuous production and expansion of the Hagbeadi.
Despite the slow, inefficient nature of their governing system, the Hagbeadi are among the greatest threats the galaxy is facing. Their space navy is the largest known by sheer volume of craft, and their territory has expanded to unfathomable levels in the centuries we have been aware of them. Worse yet is when they are not actively at war with a nation, for they are infiltrating it at the most intimate of levels. Hagbeadi agents have been known to assassinate specific figures to take their form and masquerade as them. Efforts to exorcise Hagbeadi influence in a location are often directly or indirectly sabotaged by agents present in all walks of life. Desperate societies often suffer from civil unrest, witch-hunts, and extrajudicial killings as citizens and rulers become increasingly paranoid, an environment Hagbeadi agents seek to create so that the wider Hagbeadi empire may step in to "restore order". Some worlds have welcomed annexation with open arms after suffering from years of violence at the hands of a population that does not even trust themselves. A reliable and functional anti-Hagbeadi task force is a crucial precaution in any society.
The origin of the Hagbeadi is unknown. Their presence was first known in the mid 3700s through disjointed reports of foreign interlopers communicating in an unfamiliar code. By the 4000s, their presence in the galaxy has snowballed into the formidable force it is known to be today. No specific star system of origin has been identified, but communications from the Small Magalagic Galaxy have largely been in Hagbeadi Code since the 4400s, possibly suggesting that the Hagbeadi known in our galaxy are but a part of a wider, intergalactic presence.
