"Give me liberty or give me death"
The Pneumatic League is an enigmatic coalition of Skarj and Thal under the rule of the hyperskarj Nicorenda. Among the Skarj are willing followers seeking conversion to Skarj, their Thal allies, and legions of jemons under Skarj influence. Unlike most other polities in the galaxy, the Pneumatic League primarily resides in hyperspace and rarely attempts to maintain permanent stronghold in regular space unless strategically advantageous to do so. The Pneumatic League is based in at least fifty known colonies in hyperspace, where the majority of the League's economic and civilian activity takes place in. Non-Skarj residing in League colonies usually make due with destitute conditions or are forcibly converted into Skarj.
The Pneumatic League operates under the belief that the Skarj is sapience unbridled; that true free will is clouded by the conscious or unconscious desires of the body and must be shed to achieve real freedom. Despite most political power being held by hyperskarj appointed by Nicorenda, the Pneumatic League is a fanatically egalitarian society that seeks to bring all sapient life to their full potential. The continuous effort to convert as many people as possible into Skarj is framed as a noble 'war of liberation' dedicated to usher in a post-scarcity utopia for all life. Any devastation or destruction caused is considered an acceptable loss, making the Pneumatic League particularly ruthless in the battlefield.
Although the citizens of Pneumatic League colonies generally elect their local ruler, true power in the League lies in the hands of Nicorenda. Fashioning himself as a revolutionary liberator against time and space itself, Nicorenda leads the League against what he deems 'biological reactionaries'. Ultimately Nicorenda establishes universal policy in the League and can assign or remove officials at will. As Nicorenda is the most powerful Skarj in the League, his word is law whether or not he has permission.
The Pneumatic League can generally be divided into four polities, all of which are technically capable of self-governance but remain under Nicorenda's grip. The largest and most powerful of these is known as the United Front, a coalition of smaller Skarj organizations that seek to find common ground among the other squabbling factions in the League. The United Front does not have a specific leader and are commanded directly by Nicorenda. They are especially at odds with the Red Army, an especially militant group comprised of ostracized Thal and those who had been destitute and enthralled prior to their conversion. Seeking vindication in their newfound bodily freedom, the Red Army utilizes hordes of Thal and controlled jemons that wreak havoc on combatants and civilians alike. The Red Army is also known to cause infighting within the League, often requiring intervention from Nicorenda. The Red Army is led by the twin hyperskarjs Ichmael and Aethmael, infamous for bestowing curses on those who speak their names too frequently.
On the contrary, the Green Army is relatively cooperative compared to the rest of the League and abides by a policy of willing conversion. The Green Army does not typically convert sophonts under its rule without their informed consent, a philosophy considered to be radical among Skarj of other factions. Though some may be prone to romanticize the Green Army, sophonts under their rule often suffer greatly as a result of enduring infrastructure not designed for non-Skarj. Conversion is not as much a matter of consent as much as it is of survival. It is lead by the hyperskarj Hark Erald, who assumed leadership following the disappearance of the previous hyperskarj Elline.
The Grey Army is the smallest in membership and territory among the Pneumatic League, but a major component of it nonetheless. The Grey Army does not participate in incursions or conversions frequently, instead remaining the backbone of League logistics. Although the Skarj do not require sustenance or personal equipment, individuals must still be accounted for and occupied populations must remain managed. Such is the delegated job of the Grey Army, whose membership uses their telekinetic abilities to rearrange matter at the molecular level to produce food and water for those awaiting conversion. The Grey Army is lead by the hyperskarj Argon, a figure very little is known of.
The Skarj have been known of since the advent of hyperspace travel, but the Pneumatic League did not come to be until roughly the mid 3300s when the hyperskarj Elline mass-converted the thrall population of the planet Rogyis in the Nereis System. The threat the Skarj posed was vastly underestimated by the galaxy until the apparent depopulation of an entire planet's indentured. Worse yet, the newly-converted Skarj found themselves freer than they'd ever been, and escaped into hyperspace before a proper response could be made. Skarj raids would gradually increase in size and scope over the next few centuries, during which Skarj philosophy gradually evolved into its present form. At some time in the 3700s, infighting in the early Pneumatic League culminated into outright civil war. To resolve the conflict before the League could grow fragmented beyond repair, a band of Skarj lead by Nicorenda assumed direct control of the United Front and subjugated the rest of the League over a period of twenty years through a combination of pragmatic concession and direct force. Since then, the Pneumatic League has remained in a state of conflict with the Gergosphere at large, their forces suddenly appearing from hyperspace aiming to abduct and convert as many individuals as possible before leaving as quickly as they came. The League also poses a hazard to spacecraft traveling through hyperspace, especially craft that venture too close to their shelled colonies.
